G5400

I have a HP Slimline coming in the mail used for cheap with a G4900 that I am going to upgrade the ram to 8GB and slap in a SSD.

Now the problem is I am very budget minded and the upgrade options are

G5400 or i3-8100

Now because I am budget minded the G5400 is more appealing but it is a dual core. I currently have a Pentium N4200 powered device that so far handles all of the tasks I do such as netflix, youtube, skype, occasional photoshop, and some editing, etc.

Comparing the N4200 to the G5400 will it handle the tasks that I currently do smoothly or should I just try and get the extra money and grab the i3-8100

You need to ask HP what processors are supported by their bios. Then, you can select from those.

The G5400 is supported along with the i3-8100

LGA1151 Chipset: Intel H370

It supports:

G4900

G5400

i3-8100

i7-8700

i5-8400

My point is can the G5400 do the same tasks as the N4200 I currently have as listed above just as smooth or better even though its a dual core or should I try to get the extra money for the i3-8100 even though I am very tight on money

You missed my point. You MUST make certain that the HP BIOS supports the processor. Chipset and socket compatibility are not enough.

And, you must determine that the cooling is adequate.
