Hello, so the other day i saw that my CPU is running at full speed. I am using a windows 10 machine with i3-8100 and GTX 1050TI. My question is, is it normal that my processor runs at 3.6GHz when idle and if it is how can i fix that?

goshkata58, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In reference to your question, just to let you know, there are always Windows* processes running in the background even if the computer is at idle, there is always some activity, but it is not normal that the Intel® Core™ i3-8100 is always running at 3.6GHz since the Base Frequency fluctuates depending on the load of work.

Just to confirm, what is the model of the motherboard?

Is this a new computer?

Was it working like this before?

When did the issue start?

Did you make any recent hardware/software changes?

Which tool or application are you using to see that the Intel® Processor is running at 3.6GHz?

Any questions, please let me know.

Albert R.

My motherboard is Asus prime h310m-k.

It is a computer for like almost 2 years.

It was working at idle when i got attention at 1.8GHz idle.

I just saw it on Monday.

I haven't made any changes to hardware or software.

I am using the windows task manager to see the speed.

goshkata58, Thank you very much for sharing those details.

In order to confirm if the Intel® Core™ i3-8100 Processor is working properly, please run the Intel® Processor Diagnostics Tool, it does an overall test on the unit and if it passes the test it means the Intel® Processor is working fine:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool

Just to confirm, you mentioned the Intel® Processor was running at 3.60GHz at idle, but you also said that "It was working at idle when I got attention at 1.8GHz idle" so, when the PC is at idle, is it running at 3.60GHz or 1.80GHz?

I looked in ASUS's web site that the BIOS version validated for the Intel® Core™ i3-8100 Processor is 0223, so please make sure that is the BIOS version installed. Actually we recommend to get in contact directly with ASUS to gather the instructions of how to do a BIOS update to the latest version which is 2602, normally it is not recommended to jump all the way to the latest version of the BIOS so it will be better to check with ASUS about that and also to confirm how to restore BIOS settings to defaults since there might be a setting that is causing this problem, sometimes there is a setting in the BIOS enabled by default that overclocks the Intel® Processor automatically, ASUS will be able to confirm if that is the case for this scenario:

Hello and sorry for the late response.

So i downloaded the diagnostic toll and after it tested it said that it is ok.

As for the speed at the start of the month it was runing around 1.80GHz idle and now it is running at 3.60GHz idle.

And my question was is this normal?

goshkata58, Thank you very much for letting us know those results.

For the Intel® Processor to run at 1.80GHz at idle it is expected and normal, but for the unit to run at 3.60GHz at idle, that is not normal.

The fact that the Intel® Processor passed the test it indicates that it is working fine, please attach the report of the Intel® Processor Diagnostics Tool, select "File" tab on the upper-left corner, then "View Results File" to see the report, to attach it, once you choose "reply" select the "clip" icon on the lower-left corner.

Please provide the SSU report as well:

Did you update the BIOS and get in contact with ASUS about this matter and to check about BIOS settings?

Hi goshkata58, Thank you very much for sharing the reports.

Everything seems to be fine, all the parts are fully compatible, including the memory RAM looks just fine. For testing purposes, you can always try to use the PC with the very basic configuration, using just one memory stick at the time, without the video card just basically, power supply, monitor, keyboard/mouse, one memory stick, Intel® Processor and board, but actually what we recommend to do next, when you get the chance of course, will be to try the BIOS update and then verify if the behavior is the same after doing that.

Also, you can always install the Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU) to monitor the clock speed of the Intel® Processor:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29183/Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility-Intel-XTU-?product=66427

If the problem persists after that, please provide a screenshot of "Task Manager" so we can verify further details about the Intel® Processor.

Hello goshkata58, Since I have not heard back from you, we are closing the case, but if you have any additional questions, just reply back or post a new question.

Remember that the next thing to do in this case will be to get in contact directly with ASUS to gather the instructions of how to do a BIOS update to the latest version which is 2602 and to verify how to reset the BIOS settings to defaults.
