my procesor has FCBGA1023, PPGA988 compatible sockets and the one that i want to replace it with has FCPGA988 socket

Only Dell can tell you the answer to this question. You must ask Dell what processors are compatible with THEIR BIOS. Then, you can select from those.
An upgrade processor must be socket chipset, AND BIOS COMPATIBLE.
And, this is only possible if your existing processor does not use a BGA socket.

Thank you for the answer, but i was only interested if the i7-2960XM FCPGA988 socket is compatible with the i7-2620M PPGA988 socket. My processor does not use a BGA socket.

ANd, you still have to consult with Dell for BIOS COMPATIBILITY.

Al is correct; unless the BIOS has support for a particular processor, it could be incorrectly initialized (or not at all) - and this can cause all sorts of other problems.
