I am thinking of buying a small netbook running Windows 10 with a Atom X5 Z8350 chip and understand that Microsoft are stopping supporting Atom chips. Is it worth buying. Thank you.

Here's the full story. Intel dropped support for some older Atom processors. These processors, from the Clover Trail family and launched in Q2'13, were the Z2760, Z2580, Z2560 and Z2520. Microsoft's response was not to drop support for these processors completely; they will just not allow the version of Windows 10 on these processors to be upgraded beyond the Anniversary Update (and certainly no upgrade to the Creator's Update).
The Atom x5-Z8350, from the Cherry Trail family and launched in Q1'16, is a much newer processor with full support at this time. It should be a couple of years before it is EOLed by Intel.
Hope this helps,
