Run cpu-z to see if the motherboard info is there.
If not, take a photo of the motherboard and post it here. Specifically, look for the AA number on the board.
If there is no AA number, or model number, you do not have an Intel desktop board. You will need to identify the board's manufacturer.
You are correct that the bios must support the 940XM processor, but without knowing who's bios it is, there is nothing that can be done.

Gee, just saying, Intel should have an AI that decides which forum to post a question to based upon the information in the title and post content.
[Aside: I am presuming we're talking about a laptop, since we're talking about mobile processors, so will refer to it as such.]
Ok, there is more than one reason why the higher processor (can't say 'newer', these are both 15+ year-old processors) didn't work:
- The laptop's BIOS doesn't support this processor.
- The laptop's motherboard doesn't support this processor (voltage or current requirements come into play here).
To identify which is the case, you need to determine - from information provided by the manufacturer - whether the BIOS and motherboard have support for this higher processor. I agree with Al; since the SMBIOS strings are gobbledegook, you need to look at the back/bottom of the laptop to see what identification info is provided, or, if that doesn't help, at the stickers and silk screening on the motherboard itself. Again, once determined, only communication with the manufacturer will identify the cause.
Let me caution: proceeding with BIOS updates, without knowing whether issue #2 applies, could result in NOTHING working. Possibly permanently.
