I have a Toshiba laptop C850 PSC74G 00X001 with Core i3 2312m processor with HM76 chipset. Can I upgrade the processor to Core i7 2640m? Does it require a BIOS update? If yes where can I get the bios?

You must ask toshiba what processors THEIR bios supports. Then, you can select from those processors. And, this is only possible if your current processor is NOT soldered to the motherboard.

An upgrade processor must be socket, chipset, and BIOS compatible.

If a bios update is required, the bios will have to come from - drum roll - toshiba.

And, if a bios update is required, it MUST be done with the existing processor.

You have to ask toshiba if it is bios compatible. It is their bios, not intel's.

Contact toshiba.

Also, you may want to compare the two processors here:
