I5 2500k CPU - no manual overclock option in Extreme tune up -plz help! :)

Hi guys,

I'm fairly new at this but here goes. I purchased the I5 2500k (3.3gHz 4 cpus) with the intent to overclock one day. This day has come.

I downloaded the Intel Extreme Overclocking utility. While there is an option for Advanced Tuning (all greyed out) and the other Benchmark Test there is no option, whatsoever, for Manual tuning. It just doesn't show up anywhere. Does anyone know what gives? It's not that ancient of a board.. I hope it's still supported. All of my drivers are up to date, if that makes a difference. This would almost makes me think that this CPU is NOT overclockable, except everywhere I read says that it is, which is why I purchased it.

I'm using Windows 10 w/ an AMD Radeon 6800. Just trying to get a little speed boost.

Please, hoping someone can help!

Best,

Colt

Hello, coltyhuxx:

That is correct, your processor can be overclocked; however, the Intel® XTU needs to interact with an overclocking-friendly motherboard. Have you confirmed if your motherboard is "overclocking-friendly"?

Amy.

Hi Wingman99,

Any chance you could help or point me in the right direction?

I5 2500k (3.3gHz 4 cpus)

Intel(R) 6 Series/C 200 chipset -- I also see a Z68 Express chipset listed.

All drivers are up to date. My friend in IT build this a few years ago (with a bunch of fans inside ) with the intent that I could overclock someday. It also has a large power supply, untapped, though I forget the wattage.

Also of note, when I ran "wmic bios get serialnumber" from the command prompt I end up with:

SerialNumber

System Serial Number

Is that odd?

Best,

Colt

Hi Amy,

Here is an updated (with new information) message post. My question still remains, am I overclockable with this chipset?

I'm fairly new at this but here goes. I purchased the I5 2500k (3.3gHz 4 cpus) with the intent to overclock one day. I am using Windows 10 and have an AMD Radeon 6800 graphics card.

It appears through Device Manager that I have an Intel(R) 6 Series/C 200 chipset -- I also see a Z68 Express chipset listed.

This computer was not pre-fab, it was actually built my friend who works in IT a few years back - he packed it with fans, as well, with the intent that I could one day overclock.

Does that chipset look promising, or am I out of luck? (I've been trying to do some Google'ing but struck out) Also of note, when I ran "wmic bios get serialnumber" from the command prompt I end up with:

  SerialNumber  System Serial Number

Is that odd?

Like mentioned before, Intel® XTU needs to interact with an overclocking-friendly motherboard in order to be able to overclocked, this meas that you need the BIOS to have overclocking options. Your processor will allow the overclocking settings because it is meant for this purpose.

The Intel® Z68 Express Chipset is an unlocked chipset, you can overclock it too. May I know your motherboard model? Is it an Intel motherboard?

Amy.

Hi Amy,

Again, thanks for your reply - I really appreciate it!

I have an ASUS P8Z68-VE motherboard. I also will add that I have a 650W Antec power supply and several fans (that are currently running on a combination of low and medium that I plan to crank to high).

Can you kindly advise if I need to do anything further hardware-wise, or if there is a way that I am not seeing to find the BIOS, or if I will be able to use the Intel Extreme Program?

Best,

Colt

Update your Bios to the newest. Then go into Bios to adjust the multiplier to 4.2GHz see if that works if it does try 4.5GHz with a CPU Voltage core at 1.33v with looking at the voltage on CPU-Z and HWmonitor and using prime95 for a stress test.

/thread/105639 coltyhuxx, refer to the previous input.

Bear in mind that Intel does not provide assistance for overclocking, so the best thing is waiting for another community member to post similar experience.

Regards,

Amy.
