Hi all,
Just upgraded my PC, the specs are:
I7-6700K
Asus Z170 MKI
Radeon R9 280x
Corsair 2400Mhz DDR4
Win 7 Ultimate 64x
Corsair 750W Bronze
H60
Having issues where when running idle, CPU usage spikes randomally upto 20%, esp when loading programs it can hit the high 40's (no programs in specific causing the load, just whatever is open/running will spike; including svchost etc). Playing any game almost immediately tops out the CPU at 100%. All drivers and updates installed, new install. Any idea's why this is happening? Poss defective chip? Temps are okay, higher than I expected when idling though.
Also maybe worth noting that the CPU voltage was set to 1.37V upon install without any changes to bios etc, forcing this to 1.2V improved usage slightly.
Many thanks.
Edit: After checking CPU-Z it seems as if my core speed is jumping between 800 and 4000 every second with corresponding voltages going from 0.7V to 1.37V. I understand this happens when under load, but the PC is idle.

Look in Task Manager, especially the Processes tab, where you will probably discover that you have some over-active processes.

Hi Paramountain,
I am checking the Task Manager, this is where I am supplying the above info from. It's more the case that it shouldn't be doing this at all CPU usage all round should be lower and certainly not maxing out on all games when my prev AMD processor handled it just fine. Do you have any suggestions as to why it could be doing this? Should I try reseating the CPU (can it cause this issue)?
Usually I would follow a process of elimination and replace parts to see what is causing the issue, but this is my first changeover to Intel, so I don't have a spare 1151 Socket mobo/cpu lying around to test.
It should be noted that it has passed the Intel Processor Diagnostic Software, however, I am still experiencing these issues.
Cheers

I have seen issues like yours where an anti-virus or other application is a little too eager. You mentioned swapping parts; if you have a spare drive, I suggest disconnecting your current drive(s) and installing Windows on the new one. Don't activate it via Microsoft, but install all usual updates and your testing tools. Then test. Add a game or whatever causes the problem and test.
But before you do that, reinstall your CPU cooler and make sure it is properly seated with the proper amount of thermal compound. I say this because of your comment that temperatures are "higher than I expected when idling."
Also, your comment that "corresponding voltages [are] going from 0.7V to 1.37V" could point to a PSU problem. Or it could be the motherboard. Or it could be the CPU as you suspect. Do you have a spare PSU with which to test?
