Hello,

I've made a complete troubleshooting thread at the ASUS forums:

https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?88013-ASUS-Maximus-VIII-Ranger-all-sorts-of-Q-codes&p=610739&posted=1# post610739 https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?88013-ASUS-Maximus-VIII-Ranger-all-sorts-of-Q-codes&p=610739&posted=1# post610739

I managed to get back into my BIOS and noticed my CPU Core Voltage was running with 1.5V. All my settings are at default because i have never OCed a system before.

I've now went to Ai Overclock Tuner and am using XMP

XMP DDR4-2667 16-18-35 1.2V as it says on my DDR

Lower down im at CPU Core/Cache Voltage which i put in Manual Mode to lower the 1.5 Volts to 1.250V (is that enough?)

Changed the DRAM Voltage to 1.2474V

Advanced Tab:

Hyper Threading Disabled

Active Processor Cores: 1

That only got me getting into Windows.. should i enable Hyper Threading again and put Active Processor Cores to All?

Update: Tried Hyper Threading Disabled with Active Processor Cores All. That froze after a few seconds in BIOS and it wouldnt not load Windows.

Error code i got was b2,

Update:

1902 drivers didnt change the 1.5v on my cpu cores. I changed it again to manual and 1.2V.

Upped the RAM to 1.28V

Hyper Threading enabled with Cores at 1 works.

Hyper Threading enabled with Cores at 2 works.

Hyper Threading enabled with Cores at 3 freezes my pc. Q-code A0

If i enable more then 2 cores my PC just freezes. I think i have a bad CPU?

Bought 2 days ago...

Hello dacster:

I just wanted to check if the information posted previously was useful for you, and if the problem with the cores still persists or if it was resolved?

Any questions, please let me know.

Did you have it overclocked?

Hello wingman99:

The thing is that even though the option for overclocking is available for the unlocked processors, the actual process of how to overclock it is not supported, we actually do not have any documents or information of how to do that.

Remember that the overclocking is not cover under warranty, so, before you try that it will be better if you purchase a tuning protection plan, the support that we provide for the processor is under stock configurations, so, if something happens to the processor due to overclocking, you will need this plan to replace it:

Running the memory in XMP mode at 3000 Speed is not considered overclocking the CPU correct?

Hello wingman99:

It is not the normal way of overclocking, but it is a type of overclocking, remember that the XMP profile was created to do that, so, if you are not using the processor at stock configurations, different kind of problems might be expected, in this case you are forcing the processor to run at speeds it does not support, and that might caused damage to the PC sooner or later, on the following link you will see the memory RAM that is supported by the processor, remember that the memory controller is located on the processor:

DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V

Any questions, please let me know.

When using XMP 3200 speed on a i7 6700K processor memory controller does not increase BCLK stays at 100Mhz and only the memory multiplier goes up from 11X to 16X so you are not overclocking the CPU. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/gaming/extreme-memory-profile-xmp.html Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (Intel® XMP) and Overclock RAM

Hello wingman99:

Thank you very much for providing the above information, it will be very helpful for all the peers viewing this thread.

Yes, basically what we just wanted to confirm, is that we recommend to use the processor under stock configurations, if you have the option to use the XMP profile then you can go ahead and try that option, that is no problem, is just that you are forcing the memory controller that is on the processor to run at speeds it does not support, but hopefully the PC will work without any issues.

Any questions, please let me know.

Hello dacster:

In regard to your inquiry, we always recommend to set the BIOS to defaults, and not to change anything related to the voltage, because that could damage the processor.

So, please do that, restore the BIOS to defaults, the PC should work fine on defaults values.

Once you do that, if the problem persists, then we do have a tool to test the processor, it is very reliable and it does an overall test on it, so, if the processor passed the test, it should be fine:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/19792/Intel-Processor-Diagnostic-Tool

Also, you can try a BIOS update on the board, you just need to choose the OS from the following link, and you will be able to get the BIOS file:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-RANGER/HelpDesk_Download/ https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-RANGER/HelpDesk_Download/

Additionally, you can always test the PC using just one memory stick, just to rule out a possible problem with the memory RAM.

Any questions, please let me know.

Alberto
