I downloaded Intel XTU and it says it won't start and listed the following things to do. Ensure I have the latest BIOS patch, ensure I have the latest Windows patch, and ensure Undervolt Protection is on in BIOS. I have no idea how to do any of this and am afraid of trying to update my BIOS if it even needs an update due to hearing that it can majorly screw things up if you do it wrong. Can anybody help me figure this out?

The error message refers to VBS (Virtualization Based Security). There are a couple of Windows Security features that use VBS but these should not block XTU. If your Windows has all the latest updates the solution may well be as the error message suggests that you need to upgrade to the latest BIOS.
It is recommended to install the latest drivers from the support website for your motherboard before updating the BIOS. These drivers are Intel Chipset driver, Intel Management Engine (ME) Interface driver and Intel Serial IO Software. They should be installed in this order.
The other issue here is Intel ME firmware updates. Sometimes there may be a separate ME firmware update tool. If this is the case do this before updating the BIOS. Sometimes the BIOS update includes the ME firmware update.
Follow the board manufacturers advice about how to do the BIOS update. Be aware that the BIOS update will over-ride any customisations you have made. Make a note of these as you will have to reapply them to the new BIOS.
