Living in the past: Can I upgrade my CPU? From C2D T5450 to T9500(Socket P)?

Hi everyone!

As my headline suggests, I am living in the past... Still using my very neat C2D notebook.

Currently, I have started upgrading several parts of my "http://sp.ts.fujitsu.com/dmsp/Publications/public/ds-amilo-pi-2550-d.pdf FSC Amilo Pi 2550".

I want to upgrade my Intel C2D T5450 to a better CPU.

The Datasheet of my Notebook says that a T8300 was be the maximum, but I guess that

is due to the fact that no newer C2Ds were available at this time (correct me if there are other reasons).

The T5450 is a Socket P / PPGA478 processor (http://ark.intel.com/de/products/30787/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T5450-2M-Cache-1_66-GHz-667-MHz-FSB see intel ark). (Merom)

The target CPU T9500 http://ark.intel.com/de/products/33918/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T9500-6M-Cache-2_60-GHz-800-MHz-FSB is said to be a BGA479, PGA478, PPGA478 processor belonging to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors# .22Penryn.22.2C_.22Penryn-3M.22_.28standard-voltage.2C_45_nm.29 "Santa Rosa Refresh" CPUs. (Penryn)

Due to the fact that my chipset "http://ark.intel.com/products/29822/Intel-82PM965-Memory-Controller Intel 965PM+https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/intel-io-controller-hub-8-datasheet.html ICH8-M" supports CPUs up to a FSB of 800MHz the T9500 should be fine.

Unfortunately the T9500 is a rarely found CPU nowadays and comes from (dubious?) chinese resellers.

But I could get a http://ark.intel.com/products/33917 T9300 (Socket P) quite easily. Now I wonder why the Intel ark site doesn't mention PPGA478 socket compatibility.

Does that mean that I could use a T9500 but not a T9300?

That seems quite strange...

I'd guess Intel just forgot to list the PPGA478 socket for other penryn cpus... (But asking is better than regretting )

Hello helfty,

Nobody could live in the past but today and this moment. I found both http://ark.intel.com/products/33099/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T8300-3M-Cache-2_40-GHz-800-MHz-FSB T8300 and http://ark.intel.com/products/33917 T9300 have similar specifications, in other words, if your laptop supports the former, the latter would also work well on your system. The BIOS would not set blocks to it!

We cannot guarantee that it will work on your laptop, at this point your best support will be your system manufacturer as they are more familiar with your system and how the components interact with each other.

Many processors have similar specifications and same socket but the compatibility depends on the type of BIOS you have in your system.

For example, please! Those processors are at the phase of end-of-support! Which system manufacturer would provide such help with it? Your reply just discourage others rather than provide essentially useful information! Sorry!

thank you Janagewen for sharing your thoughts. (I guess I'll give it a shot and buy a T9300 - I'll report if it works with my BIOS)

Concerning contacting the support, once I contacted the FSC support... However the personell was unkind and harsh (and I guess not trained very well...)

I am convinced that they would not help me - as Janagewen pointed out

What I meant is that we don't have much knowledge about this system and since we don't know the system specifications we don't know what processor will work for him but if someone else can help this customer that will be very much appreciated. I know that the unit is probably end of interactive support with the manufacturer but they could still have a list with the processors compatible with this system.

My apologies if I was not clear or if you did not feel ok with my answer but that was not my intention, we are in best position to help as much as we can but we also have some limitations.

You are responding to a 5-year old thread.   As has already been explained to you in your other thread, an upgrade processor must be socket, chipset, and BIOS compatible.  The manufacturer of the motherboard must have THEIR bios support the upgrade processor.
