My i7 5700HQ has 2 cores instead of 4?

My computer's "System Information" shows that my Core i7 5700HQ processor only has 2 cores, but Intel product information says that it should have 4 cores. Did I get an obscure sub series processor with the exact same name but only has 2 cores? Or did I get cheated when I bought my computer?

Let me restate Al's statement slightly better: A real Core i7-5700HQ has four cores.

It is possible to disable cores (and threads) in both the BIOS (see BIOS Setup configuration) and Windows (see MSConfig configuration) environments. It is also possible that an older processor like this could have been damaged and only two cores are operational.

I would also add that, if you purchased this processor (or system) used, you do not have a warranty with Intel and are not entitled to a replacement (warranties are not transferable, so only the original owner has coverage).

Hope this helps,
