Processor temperature reaches 98° C as soon as started

Type : Desktop Computer

CPU : Core i5 2500K

Mobo : Intel DH67BL

Heatsink : Stock

OS : Windows 7

I have been using my pc from 6 years without any problem. But since last six months as soon as I start computer, the temperature reaches very rapidly to 97°-98° C. I have checked the temperature from bios. Sometimes temperature was reaching so high that it was halted by itself and unable to start for sometime. So I got my CPU serviced from a local repair shop. He cleaned heat sink, applied some gel like thing on CPU and did the regular service. After servicing, the system is running without interruption but temperature still remains 98° C. Windows lags all the time. I am using my computer in this condition for 3 months now.

Will my processor fry very soon if I keep using it or should I keep it off till I get solution?

Please suggest some permanent solution.

If you had it serviced, with new thermal paste, heat sink cleaning, fans checked, etc., then there is nothing you can do.

As you said, your pc is six years old. Past warranty for the motherboard, and for the processor, both of which are no longer supported.

It may be a stretch, but you may want to try a different power supply.

However, it may be more of a software issue that is causing the temp problem. Are you certain that you do not have some virus or rootkit that is causing the issue? Have you tried running in safe mode to see if the temp immediately climbs as you described? Have you added any additional hardware (add-in cards, memory, etc)?

Hello Al Hill. Thanks for your reply.

I have not add anything since I bought. Temperature starts to rising as soon as I start the computer. I have attached a video here. I have started my computer after 10 hours from last shut down and going directly into the BIOS. Even the OS is yet to load, the temperature is rising, so virus might not be causing this.

Along with power supply, Do you think changing heat sink might also solve this?

Hello:

Thank you very much to Al Hill for the information provided above.

To 1113kgk:

Thank you very much for joining the Intel processors communities.

To answer your question, besides trying the steps above, to change or to test the PC with a different power supply will be a good option to try, just to rule out a possible problem with it that is causing the overheating issue. Also, another thing that you can do will be to re-apply the thermal grease.

When the PC is overheating, it will start to throttling, getting freeze and eventually it will go off by itself, those are the main symptoms of overheating.

Just to let you know, we do have a tool that does an overall test on the processor, including a temperature test, if the processor passed the test it should be working fine:

Any further questions, please let me know.

Hello Albrto.

First I want to apologize for not replying your last post. And secondly I want to thank Intel community for showing concern about my issue.

I have told the guy who serviced my computer about this discussion and solutions suggested here. So as soon as he try these solutions and give me the test results, I will post it.

I have tested my computer with the tool you have suggested. All tests have been passed successfully except temperature. I am posting the test result here:

Hello 1113kgk:

You are welcome.

No problem at all, there is no need to apologize.

Thank you very much for providing those results.

Based on the information provided above, the processor is actually getting overheated.

So, please make sure that the person that is helping you with the service on the PC checks that the power supply is working properly, same thing with the fan and if the problem persists after that, then the next thing to do will be to swap parts in order to find out if the problem is the board or processor.

If the option is available, you can try to test your processor on a different board, or test your board with a different processor, that way we will find out the source of the issue.

Please let us know the results of trying the steps above.

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards

Alberto
