(Solved) Stability issue with proc I9-14900K, crash + BSOD

Hello to all the team,

Happy to find this discussion forum, and especially not to be isolated with my I9 14900K problems…

I have had a problem since the first day with the i9 14900K CPU, I have to deactivate hyperthreading via the Bios to obtain stable operation, otherwise when launching even a simple application like Affinity designer, or Photoshop, I almost always get a blue screen, then reboot the system, sometimes the apps crash randomly...
When launching OCCT or Cinebench 2024, the computer freezes, you must systematically do a hard reset...

I was able to reproduce this fault, in fact deactivating the HT makes the system stable!!. It took me a while to find the culprit, I thought it was a bad cooling system, I installed a Corsair H150i 360 watercooler, and nothing happened...
For information, I have no overclocking of the components, everything is original in the Bios by default.

I'm on clean Windows 11 23h2 (reinstalled), my MSI PRO Z790-A MAX WIFI , Nvidia 4090 24GB graphics card, latest driver 551.52

I just flashed the MSI CM to M20, the update went well, but unfortunately activating hyperthreading via Bios still causes my BSOD or crashes the apps... Too bad... the CPU works great without the HT, in itself, it could stay like that, but given the price of the proc I'm a little afraid of instability or more serious problems after the warranty... never had a problem with Intel CPUs for 30 years …

I have just been lent another CPU, it's an i7-12700F socket LGA1700, after several continuous tests on OCCT and especially hyperthreading activated, no BSOD or app crashes... it works perfectly, so by deduction my problem does not come from the Main board!

By some miracle I came across the INTEL solution on this forum:

1. Solution A:
1. In BIOS, select "OC", select "CPU Core Voltage Mode", select "Offset Mode", select "+(By PWM)", and adjust the voltage until the system is stable, we recommend not exceeding 0.025V for a single increase. If the problem persists, you can move on to solution B.

2. Solution B:
1. In BIOS, select "OC", select "DigitALL Power", modify "CPU Loadline Calibration Control" and recommend starting from "Mode 7" at a lower value until the system is stable.

Solution A: for me, the system boot is blocked, Windows cannot start, I find my bios after restarting the system. I think I must not enter the correct value "0.025", the adjustment of the value: it is not clear to me.

Solution B: works wonderfully for me!!!!!!!!!! the computer is finally stable with all my applications, even the heaviest ones like Cinebench, in fact I saw for the first time my CPU consumption go above 300W under OCCT… is this normal…?!

Dear Intel engineers, can you explain to me why? And with the "Mode 7" parameter selected, isn't my processor restricted/underutilized? This is the first time I'm working in the BIOS settings of my machine, the default values have never caused me a problem in 30 years, forgive me for my ignorance, but this kind of modification cannot be improvised …

Attached the SSU file

Thank you for your explanations.
Sorry for my English

Best regards
Christopher.

I had issues with the Jetbrains PHPStorm IDE. It is a java product, and it was crashing with EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. From time to time my Windows 11 was crashing too, either with blue screen or with black screen.

My Gigabyte Model Z790 AORUS PRO X (U3E1) motherboard bios was set to use by default:

Intel Turbo Boost Technology

and

Intel Turbo Boos Max Technology 3.0

After disabling them both my issues with PHPStorm were solved. It seems that there are stability issues with this cpu when overclocked. And by default the mainboard bios is overclocking them.

Good morning,

I did the latest update to the MSI PRO Z790-A MAX WIFI motherboard:

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-Z790-A-MAX-WIFI/support

Do you have any advice on the bios configuration parameters recommended by Intel for our famous I9-14900K processor? thanks in advance.

Sincerely

Christopher.

on 14900k I tried everything and even undervolting did not help - in my case only disabling Hyper threading helped. After disabling, zero stability problems, not a single crash.

Same issue here  with a ASUS ROG Z790 wifi II and a i9 b14900 K. I get crashes in certain games (sometimes even just during launching). This games are Hogwarts legacy and Robocop. Sometimes I also get crashes in some PCVR games but those are more rare.

I want to try your "solution B" but I have a question: "...starting from "Mode 7" at a lower value until the system is stable".  What value do you consider low to start with?

Thank you very much in advance

Best Regards

Anyone have options for an Alienware PC/Bios (I have the latest bios version for an Aurora R16)? They don't have any of these options described in the thread.

For Dell / Alienware R16

In the bios,

1. disable speedstep.
2. Disable speed shift.
3. Disable hyperthreading.

After these 3 things were done I was able to reinstall Alienware performance center and have it help to manage things better. Turned hyperthreading back on with no problems so far. Before, several programs would not uncompress properly. CrC error for everything. Even nvidea and OEM stuff. Once I did the 3 steps above, the computer was civil again. And extremely stable.

Personally if stability is important, I would recommend these settings for anyone using an R16 to earn a living.

As a further update, running an urgent Bios update, all Windows 11 updates, and making the bios settings changes above (Speedstep, speedshift, HT off) have made the system stable and usable. However, based on the machine's current performance, the processor will STILL need to be replaced. The main plus here is that the machine is stable enough to continue working, albeit with a 50% reduction in processing capacity.

Performance Benchmarks:
- A video project that previously would take 32 seconds to render, now takes 48 seconds.

- An audio production project that would use only 20% resources before, now uses up to 45% of resources.

Not great, but at least the machine is stabled and usable until either a warranty replacement of the processor OR funds are available to purchase a replacement processor!

Dear i9-14900K/KS CPU owners,

I have been struggling since this first post on this forum (February 2024), despite Intel's various hacks, despite the activation of "MODE 7"; deactivation of HT; and the configurations of the different power values recommended by Intel, to my great regret my instabilities are still present...

What's new is this unexpected error message on Edge or Chrome: EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION

The BSODs have been back for a few weeks, the only solution for the moment to regain stability is to regularly reduce the performance cores by 100Mhz,  I had started the reduction to 5.8Ghz since May 2024, today I am at 5.5Ghs on the 8 main cores modifiable via the Intel XTU application...

For me the diagnosis is clear: over time the silicon degrades significantly, at this rate, I will end up at 4.5Ghz at the end of the year...

How do you interpret this behavior in your opinion...??

I can't wait to test the patch promised by Intel in mid-August...

In the meantime, I remain pessimistic about the future state of my chip (and yours!!!!), and we will certainly have to request an RMA quickly. (or switch to AMD, too bad...)

Best regards.

Christopher.

I actually created my Intel Community account just to say thank you to @ChrisR09 and the others for their provided solutions, but I just saw the end of this thread

However, as I was suffering from the exact same issues like most of you (BSODs, Crashes, Freezes, Error messages in Browsers and other programs etc.) I decided to pick most of the provided solutions at once, which is

- Chris' B) solution (Mode 7)
- SVID behavior to "Trained" - or in my case "Auto" on my Asus Z790 Prime A-Wifi
- Disabling Hyperthreading
- Disabling Turbo Boost + Boost 3.0

And from what I can tell now is that it's the very 1st time that I have a 100% stable machine. Not a single crash, not a single freeze, no error messages in my system, all buttery smooth. And lately I've had crashes every 3-15 minutes, the computer was entirely unusable on a daily basis for work and private stuff.

Now my computer is up 48hrs without a single crash and I almost already gave up hope for this, but I'm super happy that I've found this thread and the combination of the provided workarounds works like a charme for me (Let's see for how long though regarding Chris' last message).

Also, on a sidenote: My computer is much more silent and the CPU's ~40° Celsius (Yes, exactly, FOURTY) cooler than with all of the above stuff enabled. I'm not noticing much performance decrease either, if at all.

Just swinging by to add to his and report myself. Curious with what Intel and OEMs will come up in mid august, but it can't actually be better than this (stability-wise).

Have a great weekend y'all!

I also created my Intel Community account just to say thank you to @ChrisR09 and the others for their provided solutions, but I just saw the end of this thread and see there is still no resolution for this issue. I am having Visual Studio crashes every 5-15 mins and occasionally a BSOD even after implementing solution A & B also.

When I run P95 I do seem to be getting a consistent mathematical error with at least one core. I am going to try and run P95 over night this evening to see how many failures occur over a long period, but then I think I am at a loss and will likely need to RMA my CPU.

Kind Regards

Hello guys,

Sorry for you Callahorn, there is no solution, don't waste your time "tinkering" you need to RMA your chip!

For information, the long-awaited update 0x129 of Intel's microcode did not absolutely correct my stability problems... Don't waste time, have your chip replaced...

Personally, I have to take care of it quickly, it is my professional computer, I cannot afford to stay without a machine for several days, we are not even sure that Intel has stock in order to quickly honor the deliveries...

To follow up on my previous post, for the moment I am stuck at 5.5Ghz via the bios on the 8 main cores, the CPU remains stable.

Have a nice day everyone.
Kind regards.
Chris.

Hello guys,

I've an Intel I9-14900k, a ZZ90 Gaming Plus Wife Motherboard and 32GB of DDR5 Memory (Corsair Vengeance RGB).

I was running into similar issues, but a couple of days ago it got worse. Furthermore, I thought it was related to the memory (based on some online searching). But I ran the memory diagnostic tool, and everything appeared to be fine. I even tried to reinstall Windows, but the PC would crash even when booted from the USB drive... it only seemed to be stable in Safe Mode. I was starting to think that my CPU was faulty and that I had to replace it.

Then I found this post. Solution B worked like a charm, and it has been stable ever since!

Thank you so much everyone.
