Temperature Throttling and OS crash on high consumable tasks with default settings. What settings best to use tweaking 4790k if rendering in Maya - Arnold?

On default settings I get Thermal Throttling and 100 C degrees temperature when rendering. More of that during video encoding, I had even BSOD sometimes, I read forums, watched videos and people says that you need to configure 4790k properly, but the problem is that not a lot of people goes into numbers and then just explains these numbers.

I used this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxuNUIqeml4 as template and input the same values using XTU.

But can anyone explain are these correct values? And what values will be best if I am going to use it in rendering?

I am using Maya -Arnold rendering right now.

Also when I first time installed XTU it counted 4 active cores, but now it shows only 1 Active Core even during stress test or rendering.

I read on forums this might be cause by Hyper Threading, in HWmonitor and CPU Z, they show 4 cores working, but not XTU.

In BIOS I reset settings on default so on screenshot you can actually see default settings At Boot and tweaked one.

Hello HUmbr

Thank you for posting in the Intel Community.

After looking in the information that you have shared on your post, I am noticing that you are looking for details about what are the correct values changes can be done on the processor voltages and temperatures, bear mind that altering clock frequency or voltage may damage or reduce the useful life of the processor and other system components, and may reduce system stability and performance.

For more details about Overclocking you can refer to Overclock your CPU with unlocked Intel® Core™ processor (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/gaming/overclocking-intel-processors.html

NOTE: Overclocking the processor voids the Intel® processors warranty (Intel® Boxed Processors Three-Year Limited Warranty https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005862/processors.html).

Hello Leonardo, no I dont want to overclock, as you can see on screenshot I am downgrading default settings, because on default settings my CPU is temperature throttling and crash the system. It just not workable!

On my screenshot plz check: At boot - default settings and proposed are settings that i lowered, but are these correct?

Also why XTU counts only 1 Active core, becausel like people said earlier it is Hyper Threading?

Thank you for reply, Ill check your links, but I dont want to overclock my CPU, it is overclocking itself with Turbo boost on default settings, I want to limit it, so it will not overheat and wont crash my OS

Hello HUmbr

Thank you for the clarification, in this case, the making voltage and temperature changes (overclocking or underclocking) may damage or reduce the useful life of the processor and other system components and may reduce system stability and performance, and Voids the Intel® processors warranty.

In reference about the Intel® XTU active core, it means that at the time of monitoring the Intel® processor is just using one of the physical cores. to confirm if the if all the cores are active you can check the device manager under the processor tab, you should see 8 cores (max threads on your Intel® processor).

Hello Leo, I understand you and that by applying manual setting and tweaking I turn it into non warranty case, but what else I can do if working on default settings it crash my system and makes it unstable!? Do I have other options?

I just want you guys to consult me with values I should change in XTU or BIOS, so it will work smooth and stable.

Also I see 8 cores, but XTU count as 1 even when rendering on max load. So it counts it like that because of HyperThreading?

Also with default settings, but HyperThreading on, it also counts active cores as 1

2019-05-28_18-28-32.pngUpdate: default settings, hyperthreading off, stress test, still 1 active core, but in range it shows up range: 0 - 4, but it never goes higher then 1

Hello HUmbr

Thank you for the information.

·        In order to look into your system configuration please provide me with the following information:

o  Motherboard and BIOS:

o  Cooling system:

o  RAM model and part number:

o  Airflow set up:

·        When did tie behavior started happening?

·        Was there any hardware change prior to this issue?

·        Does this behavior happens if you run the system on the default BIOS setting without any auto-tuning enable?

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SOC Force Bios ver: F8

Cooling system on CPU is: Zalman CNPS10X Extreme

RAM models:

  1. 16Gb DDR-III 1600MHz Kingston HyperX (KHX16C9K2/16) 2*8KIT
  2. 16Gb DDR-III 1600MHz Kingston HyperX Fury Black (HX316C10FBK2/16) (2x8Gb KIT)

Airflow setup: Front to back, Bottom to top

It started to happen long ago, but I was sure that was somehow connected to RAM or some kind of driver failure, also it is important to mention that this happened only on hard sys load, it did not occur or occuring right now, during regular system run, or even in games, yeah it happened sometimes in ARMA 3, but not so often, so I did not thought it might be connected with CPU temperature throttling.

Really worrying stuff started during video and 3d rendering, crashes grow up to 60 percents. From that time I notice that when the system crash, it happens when my CPU is on the stress load, also I asked on Adobe forums and they also helped me out that it was CPU . First in Bios I disabled Intel AutoBoost and it helped a lot, it lowered system crash on rendering down to 20 - 30 percents, after some time I limit active core multiplier for 3rd and 4th cores: from default 44 to 43 on 3rd and 42 on 4th. And that solved a problem to bsod during video rendering in adobe encoder. But after I was rendering the second scene in Maya - Arnold, and during second render run, system suddenly crashed, I retry it, and again on the second render it crashed. With the help of XTU and HWmonitor I figured out, that on the 2nd render run, my CPU temp rises up to 100 degrees C and it starts to get temp throttling. After this I start to search a solution on internet, on some forums people were talking thath I7 4790k, just do not limit to 88 tdp in auto mode, I checked more themes and videos about overheating with 4790k, I dont know why, but all of them were limiting tdp to 88W, then on different themes on different forums people were suggesting different values to put through bios or XTU, but none of them explained why these numbers after all, so I chose the video I was giving a link to you before with the guy trying the most my case situation and I tried his values for test, yeah it helped, and no crashes appear after that, but I decided to post here, so Intel specialists may suggest me best settings for my rig and my purpose.

Hello HUmbr

Thank you for the information.

After looking into your system components everything seem to be compatible with the Intel® processor, at this point you could try to have the system working default BIOS settings and start testing the system, make sure that the cooling solution and fans are working properly, reapply the thermal paste if it is necessary. In reference to changing the values of the processor (temperature or voltages) as mentioned previously, we do not support overclocking or underclocking maybe the community can provide you with more assistance about it.

Hope this helps.

Hello Leo, sry for late answer, it took me some time, i changed thermal paste, cleaned cats wool and dust, added one more fan on front, reset bios settings, and it seems working fine right now without crashing.

It will take me a while for testing in different rendering software and games, ill report on news.

During XTU tests - it worked 30 minutes on full load fine, (checked)

during Handbrake coverting - fine. (checked)

Ill test video render in Premiere and Ecnoder and ill report you the results. (method to crash my system number 1)

And will test in Maya Arnold rendering
