I have purchased a brand new tray i7-14700K and it has quite a few dents on the corners of the IHS(please see the attached photo}.
I do understand that I am supposed to buy the boxed version, but it was not and still is not available where I live and due to restrictions, I cannot acquire it beyond what is locally available to me.
Now the reason that I am posting here is because I simply want to know if it's possible for an IHS to be shipped/manufactured like this from Intel or this simply cannot happen.
And I want to know this because if these defects, in this quantity, could in fact happen during manufacturing and pass Intel's QC, then I have nothing to worry about.
Otherwise, something has happened to it after it left Intel and therefore I have the right to ask the seller to replace it.
Currently the seller says it's normal and nothing they could do, and they would only replace it if there are any performance problems.
I personally don't a few tiny dents on the IHS, specially on the corners, but I just wanna make sure that this could in fact happen during manufacturing and not afterwards.
It may sound silly, but I'm phisycally traveling right now to another city, where the retailer is located, just to convince them to change it.
We will see, but I really really need second opinions in order to see how much I should push.
Thank you very much beforehand.

To me, it looks like this processor has been socketed at least once previously. Just saying.
Just so you know, using a tray processor from some company that had a surplus is not supported by Intel. This makes you the second owner and Intel warranties only the original owner.

Thank you very much for your response.
I do understand the warranty situation and I accept it, I just don't want a used processor, which I actually forgot to explicitly mention but is the whole point of my post, so thank you for bringing that up.

Hello.
So I took a 12 hours trip to the dealer and it paid off, albeit after waiting for 6 hours in there.
Not only they changed it, but also I've discovered something more important.
First and foremost that chip was used, there is no doubt about that.
And what I've discovered through Intel's warranty page is that if the batch number starts with 'x', then it's a boxed processor, and if it starts with 'l' then it's a tray processor.
The first one was the 'x' batch and the warranty page showed me the warranty info(and I didn't realize until now that it literally says it's a boxed processor), but the new one starts with 'l' and it's a tray processor.
So long story short, they sold me a used boxed processor as tray, but now I have a flawless tray version.
Be it better or worse in terms of silicon lottery, doesn't matter, it's at least what it's supposed to be and most importantly it's brand new and I'm happy, that's all that matters to me.
Thank you all.

Hello again.
I would like to provide some additional details, in case anyone stumbles upon this topic in a similar situation.
As I have already mentioned, the processor was replaced, and I had to physically travel for it, but I couldn't inspect the IHS properly at the shop due to poor lightning condition, and by that I don't mean anything fancy, literally the natural light that comes through the window of my room is enough to inspect the IHS, I don't need nor do I have any fancy equipment, it's just that the poor fluorescent light in that shop without any natural light was not enough to properly see the IHS.
Anyhow, the point is, when I got back, well, the IHS didn't have any 'dents', but it sure had some super super shallow scratches, and on top of that, I could see a pattern of horizontal lines on the IHS that I can only imagine and almost sure that is the result of installation of a cooler(cold plate) on it.
I requested to return it, and they accepted, purely because they knew I wouldn't back down, so I sent it back and still waiting for my money, but the good news is, the box version is finally available, although a whole lot more expensive, but I will be getting that.
The whole point is that, do not get a tray processor for personal builds, or you'll end up like me, regretting it and having to deal with the aftermath, specially if you're sensitive.
But at the end of the day, I am really happy that I can finally get the box version.
Cheers!

Hello RayTheMay
Thank you for posting on the Intel️® communities.
Regarding Tray processors, please feel free to read this article: What Is the Difference Between Intel® Boxed and Tray Processors?
Tray Processor:
As part of an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) system. Tray processors are sold to high-volume manufacturers, such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, Hewlett-Packard or Lenovo. They buy processors in bulk and incorporate them into PCs (laptops, desktops, All-in-Ones). Warranty replacements and technical support for tray processors are provided directly by these providers. We refer to these processors as tray or OEM processors. Intel doesn't provide direct warranty support. Contact your OEM or reseller for warranty support.
Also, we are happy to know that you will receive your replacement, however, the official contacts are the following, here are pages where you can look up contact information, including local/country phone numbers, by geography:
U.S. and Canada: Intel Customer Support
Europe, Middle East, and Africa: Intel Customer Support EMEA
Asia-Pacific: Intel Customer Support APAC
Latin America: Intel Customer Support LAR
Please keep in mind that this thread will no longer be monitored by Intel. Thank you for your understanding.
Best regards,
Isaac Q.
