Turbo Boost 2.0 and C-States

Hello Forum,

I'm trying to research the effect of C-States on my i5-8400.

I googled countless times but I am unable to really find the right info.

I understand that C6-state is crucial for giving more headroom on the CPU to turbo.

Will going one step further to also have C7-state running give any beneficial effect to the Turbo Boost function over C6-state?

And what about Package states? Will having Package state C3 on result in a better Turbo Function over disabling Package States?

I've googled the whole day on this subject, but there is too little information.

Can someone please shed some light on the matter? Thanks in advance!

Hello Jmeister,

Thank you for posting on the Intel ® communities.

I can see that you want information regarding Turbo Boost and C-states.

I was reviewing some information and I was able to find 2 documents which could be of use regarding this, please refer to the links below:

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/power_management_of_intel_architecture_servers.pdf https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/power_management_of_intel_architecture_servers.pdf

This information is more needed for developing and servers so please, if more information is needed, post in the forum for developer's or the resource and design center where you can find documentation :

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your answer!

I've read the articles completely and it was very informative.

However I can't seem to find in-depth information about the mechanics of Turbo Boost.

I'm trying to find out the exact level of powering down cpu parts up till the point of maxing

out the Turbo Boost capability.

After extensive testing I've found out that Package States don't seem to matter at all.

And for the Turbo Boost to be fully functional, it seems like C3-State and C6-State

are the highest power saving states needed to create headroom for Boost.

Going higher than C6 seems to be pointless for anything other than Power Saving.

It seems my findings are correct, but confirmation of someone with expertise would be great!

Hello Jmeister,

Thank you for your response.

First, I would like to say that I am glad the information provided was helpful. However, as mentioned, this information is more needed for developing and servers so please, if more information is needed, post in the forum for developer's or the resource and design center where you can find documentation :
