Why do all new Intel profiles trigger Current/EDP Limit Throttling in XTU?

Hi:

I have an Asus z690 based mobo and running a 13900K processor with the latest 3602 BIOS released 5/31/2024 whi. I have tried to not trigger the current limit setting in XTU but have failed, whether in idle or running a 60 second stress test.  Moving my mouse to open a window form another program or starting to run videos triggers this limit for a few seconds (see below).

I run Cinebench R23 and saw that it limited all 8P cores to 5.1 GHz at most and never the stated 5.5GHz. E-cores run full speed at 4GHz in this test. This is using the Intel Extreme Profile.

My question is with regard to the new Intel Performance and Extreme Profiles, are they supposed to limit current, such that the current limit flag is triggered in XTU? Is this normal?

Best Regards,

David M.

Yes, the current is limited by these profiles so the XTU notification is normal. There are Intel recommended settings but to see what they are for your processor in the ASUS BIOS go to Advanced->Ai Tweaker->Internal CPU Power Management.

Hey, thanks for the quick response ... so what exactly is the need for these profiles? I don't play games or don't overclock CPUs (though I'll be under-volting mine eventually). I sometimes run 3D Mark benchmarks to determine how good (or not) my system is, compared to others of similar design.

Two ASUS bios versions ago, when these profiles didn't exist and all was good on my end, except the temperature caused throttling of cpu speed when I run Cinebench R23 at 100 degrees C. My Corsair H150i AIO just couldn't handle the cpu heat output.

Anyways, I wish Intel would tell folks about the current limit notification in XTU when using their profiles.

Thanks!

Hi, SmartOne_2000.

Thank you for posting in our Community.

If I may offer input here about the necessity of these profiles, especially since you don't engage in CPU overclocking. These profiles, typically found in BIOS updates, serve to optimize performance based on various usage scenarios. They can help manage power consumption, thermal output, and stability across different tasks and environments.

Regarding your experience with the ASUS BIOS versions, you mentioned that everything was fine before these profiles were introduced. However, you encountered issues with CPU temperature causing throttling during intensive tasks like running Cinebench R23. This suggests that managing thermal limits, especially with your Corsair H150i AIO cooler, has been a challenge.
