XTU Installation for i7-6850K

The XTU page lists i7-6850K as supported.

When I download and attempt to install, I first get a popup stating that I'm trying to install on an unsupported platform, and the, the installation fails with "0x80070643 . Fata error during installation".

I had previously been using MSI XTU, but that was version 6.x from 2016(!!) and that is the latest version MSI provides.

Any help will be appreciated.

1. Do you have any other overclocking tools installed?

2. What is the operating system installed?

3. Are you using a laptop or desktop computer?

thanks for your reply.

I had been trying to use MSI XTU v6.1.2.121 (from 2016!!), but I'm very new to overclocking and was having some issues, so I checked of a newer SW version. MSI had none newer.

In the MSI XTU there was a link pointing to something like "Overclocking Intel core CPUs", which pointed to an Intel page, so I followed that and found among other things, several utilities for CPU overclocking, and inspecting, including How to Overclock with Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility. I found the latest (only) download of that and checked if my CPU is still supported (i7-6850K - there is a link to a page stating that it is supported and a download link, which I used to download XTU v7.8.0.21.

I was uncertain, whether this was the same SW as from MSI, but thought, if they are not the same, then I will have parallel installations, which I can compare. If they are, the newer version will replace other older, and that would also be okay.

I attempted that installation, and after agreeing to terms and conditions, and confirming to allow the SW to make changes to my PC, I got a small popup

After clicking OK, almost immediately I get this

I can post the log file too if it helps.

I uninstalled the MSI XTU SW and tried again, with the same results.

I don't really have any other CPU overclocking SW installed. I have MSI Afterburner, but I've never used it to change any overclock settings; only monitoring. Same with MSI CPU-Z. Both are the newest versions.

I also have some management software like MSI Command Center and MSI ECO Center. The former I sometimes use to turn MSI OC GENIE of and on (pre-baked overclock settings from MSI), otherwise over the BIOS. I also have FireStrom from ZOTAC for overclocking and managing my GTX 1080 Ti, but I've never tried to OC that... yet.

Other than those I only have benchmark SW like from Futuremark and Heaven Benchmark.

Basically, until just recently I've never tried to OC, only turned MSI OC Genie on and off over BIOS or with MSI Command Center.

Windows version is Windows 10 Pro, 21H2 and up-to-date including all drivers, as of last week.

It's a desktop system,

CPU: i7-6850K

System board: MSI X99A Gaming 9 ACK, BIOS 3.7.

System disk: Crucial P5, 2 TB, M.2.

I apologize for the miscommunication. Based on the release notes, Broadwell processors are not supported in this new version (7.8) and that's why it is not working for you. 


I will send a request to the team in change so they can correct this error.

I was kind of expecting this to be the case. 

Since the "official" link to XTU download supporting i7-6850K is erroneous, could you please provide a download link to the latest version of XTU, which does support my processor.
