Hello. I have an intel core i7-11700k propcesor
When working on video files, it reaches temperatures of 96 degrees Celsius!
When cooling be quiet! pure loop 240mm.
It can even restart sometimes.
It is 40 degrees in normal operation.
What temperatures are suitable for this processor?

So the Intel support engineers can have more information about your system, Please download and run the Intel System Support Utility (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows- ) for Windows. Select all data categories and then have it generate a report. Next, have the tool Save the report to a text file (don't try to use the Submit capability; it doesn't work). Finally, using the Drag and drop here or browse files to attach dialog below the edit box for the body of your response post, upload and attach this file to the response post.

Would love to add that to work normally I had to turn off Intel Boost.

Hello @Foxas

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

Many Intel® processors make use of Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, which allows them to operate at a higher frequency for a short amount of time. When the processor is operating at or near its maximum frequency it's possible for the temperature to climb very rapidly and quickly reach its maximum temperature. In sustained workloads, it's possible the processor will operate at or near its maximum temperature limit. In those scenarios, good system integration and thermal design are crucial to get the benefits of Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and avoid overheating issues.

Since you mentioned you have to disable Intel® Turbo Boost Technology to work properly, have you verified that your Thermal Solution can dissipate the extra heat that generate due to Intel® Turbo Boost Technology and sustained workloads?

Also, could you please provide us with the following information in order to check this behavior further?

1- Is this a new system? When did you purchase the processor?

2- Is this behavior occurring since the first day that you have the device or did it work fine before? Is there any sign of physical damage on the processor?

3- Did you enable Intel® XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles) or configure memory voltage? (We are asking this since based on the Intel® SSU report, the Configured Voltage for the RAM is "1400 millivolts").

4- Full brand and model of the following components:

  • Cooler Thermal Solution/Fan:
  • CPU case:

5- Just to make sure, when you said "It can even restart sometimes." Is this happening when the CPU reaches 96+/- degrees?

6- How are you monitoring the temperature? Could you please provide screenshots or more details?

7- Is the overheating issues occurring only when working on video files? If yes, could you please let us know what is the CPU and GPU load on the Device Manager >> Performance tab? Also, why type of work do you do with these video files? Is it a high-demanding encoding/decoding workload?

The case is aerocool ds 200.
Cooling be quiet! pure loop 240mm.
Procesro was purchased in early August.
I tested Intel® XMP on and off.
temperature measurement in HWMonitor.
The processor heats up the most when encoding video files.
I was able to lower the temperature in the max work to 86-88 degrees.
The computer reset after a long operation at 96 degrees.
The case has 3 additional fans. On the back 120mm on top 2x140mm. Cooler moved to the front of the case.

Hello Foxas

Thank you for your response.

Please kindly review and try the following recommendations in case you haven't tried yet:

  1. Ensure that the airflow of the fans is not restricted to guarantee their maximum performance and verify that chassis internal airflow is adequate. Since you are using multiple fans, please also check general airflow rate and direction are correct to confirm that overall system intake and exhaust are balanced.
  2. Ensure that the pump cable and radiator fans are plugged into appropriate board headers and that the right amount of thermal interface material (TIM) on the processor has been applied. We recommend checking with the Cooling Solution manufacturer for proper instructions. You may also review this article: How to Apply Thermal Paste and How It Works.
  3. Try to load the default BIOS setting in your system. Note: You may wish to note the current BIOS settings before resetting the BIOS. Also, it is worth mentioning that as per the Technical Documentation for this processor, it supports DDR4-3200 Voltage 1.2V". We recommend checking with the motherboard manufacturer (OEM) in order to confirm the system is running with the correct memory RAM settings supported by the processor. If you currently have Intel® XMP enabled, we recommend disabling this feature or selecting a profile that provides the configuration supported by the Processor (DDR4 3200 1.2V) and by the motherboard.

If the behavior persists, please provide us with the following details and tests:

1- Run the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool to verify that both the processor is in good working condition. To save the report, once the test is done, click on "File >> View Results File" and attach the .txt file to your reply.

2- Perform a CPU stress test using Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU). Go to "Stress Test" and check "CPU Stress Test", you may leave the default timer (5 minutes) and then click on "Start Testing".

During the test, please keep also the Windows® Task Manager showing the "Performance tab" >> CPU and GPU. Please monitor CPU frequency and temperature on Intel® XTU and take some screenshots during the test making sure you capture both tools: Intel® XTU and Task Manager, for instance, side by side. Please upload the screenshots to this thread.

3- Please provide detailed step-by-step instructions of the encoding work you do when this behavior occurs. This is very important to understand better the environment and the behavior. If possible, please provide a short video or screenshots to show this.

4- When you said "computer resets after a long operation at 96 degrees", please provide a more specific time range regarding the "long operation". For instance, 1 hour, 10 hours, 2 days, etc.
