i7-990X Extreme Edition 3.4 GHz installled on a DX58SO2

Hello!

Recently updated my PC with the above components, all went well, however after running the "Intel Processor Identification Utility"

it reported the Processor speed as 2.79GHz, with 3.47GHz expected. This seems like a significant difference to me.

Can anyone please tell me why this might be happening and how to get it up to the manufacture specs.? Thanks in advance

Please make sure that the Enhance Intel SpeedStep® Technology is disabled, since this feature will force the processor to run slower in order to save power consumption.

Also install the latest BIOS version for your motherboard.

Thanks you so much, After checking the BIOS it was enabled, the reported speed was almost the same as the expected speed.

Problem not solved yet, after shuting down and reboot it came back with the same CPU speed as before 2.79GHz. Any thoughts

as to why this happens. Thanks for any help or sugestions.

Check the Enhance Intel SpeedStep® Technology in the BIOS again to see if it is enabled again, if that is the case, then try installing the latest BIOS version (0779) for your motherboard which you can download from:

If that does not solve the issue, then try doing a CMOS clear as instructed at:

After resetting the CMOS, the first time it booted it came back at 3.46GHz, then after setting the clock, the computer did a auto restart

and is now at 2.79GHz. The latest BIOS was also reinstalled. Do you have any other ideas or thoughts on this issue? I really appreciate

Try performing a BIOS recovery as instructed at:

It does not matter if you already have the latest BIOS version, just follow the instructions above.

You can download the latest BIOS version from here in order to perform the BIOS recovery:

This method might fix the microcode on the processor, if the same issue continue, then try testing with another processor to see if the system has the same behavior.

If the same behavior happens with a 2nd processor, then it is a motherboard issue, otherwise it is a processor issue.

If you do not have a spare processor to test with, you can try with a friend's processor or by taking your motherboard to a local computer store so they can test another processor.

Adolfo, Are you advising me as a representative of Intel? I don't have a spare CPU, or Mother board,

also what computer stores are you talking about that could check it out for me? Do you think I should

contact Intel for exchange? Any help is greatly apreciated.

If you want the processor to be replaced then please contact Intel Technical support at: 916-377-7000, but I am pretty sure they will ask you to test the processor on a 2nd motherboard.

990X made for overclocking, bad settings in BIOS.

To solve the problem

go to your bios and you need to go to performance, go in to the CPU settings and set the multiplier from 21 to 26.... this will give you full speed as i've just installed exactly same CPU/Motherboard, had the same issue, used intels extreme tweaking tool, it showed clearly where it was losing speed, did the adjustment and working fine now.
