I am currently using Quartus II 14.1 and am new to FPGAs. Defined pins dont show in the Pin Planner, there are no nodes there althought the previous vhd file had been saved and pins defined. Why is that? Thanks for you help.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Can you post the code? Any top-level ports would appear in the Pin Planner for assignment after performing at least Analysis & Elaboration or full synthesis on the design.
