Hi,

I found I can't reprogram the chip EPM7160SQC160-10N because the JTAG is disabled in original design. So I can't program it by USB blaster cable. of courese it can be programmed by external programmer before it is soldered on the PWA. I want to know whether the external programmer also uses the JTAG interface to program the chip. If it uses the other pins to program the chip, what're these pins?

Hi fr1,
it is possible to reprogram or to erase such a device with help of an universal device programmer even if the device has a JTAG lock active. The following 3rd party manufacturers have such universal device programmers: BPM Micro, Elnec or Hi-Lo systems. The same can be done with help of the Altera Programming Unit as well but this product has been obsoleted for a long time.

Regards,
Martin
