I recently upgraded my Lenovo ThinkPad T61p (Type 6457-BF5) with an Intel SSD 520 Series (180 GB), and installed Windows 10 Professional 64-bit (Build 16299) on it. While enjoying the great performance improvement, I also noticed something strange - the system would freeze every a few minutes, although there was no or light access to the SSD. During the incident, the laptop's HDD indicator was constantly on for up to a minute, and the mouse cursor could sometimes be moved, but clicking on objects was unresponsive.
I searched online and found a Microsoft article entitled "Task Manager might show 100% disk utilization on Windows 10 devices with Message Signaled Interrupt (MSI) mode enabled" (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3083595/task-manager-might-show-100-disk-utilization-on-win... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3083595/task-manager-might-show-100-disk-utilization-on-win... ). The described symptoms seemed exactly the same as mine, so I followed the instructions to disable the MSI mode in the registry, but the problem persisted after reboot.
I checked my SSD with the Intel SSD Toolbox and it is in perfect condition. I have also updated its firmware to the latest version, but nothing helped.
Others suggested that the default Windows 10 driver for the Standard SATA AHCI Controller is buggy, and should be replaced with Intel's Rapid Storage Technology driver. I therefore found and downloaded the relevant driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27400/-%3Fproduct%3D55005 Download Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) ). However, I encountered the following error message when starting SetupRST.exe (I translated the error message from Chinese to English, so it may appear slightly differently from the original English version):
Due to the error below, Setup has terminated prematurely:
The platform is not supported.
I do not understand, as Intel SSD 520 Series is in the supported product list, and my Lenovo ThinkPad T61p uses Intel PM965 chipset - they should be supported, right? I tried to look into the log file, but was confused by the overwhelming information in it - it appeared to me that it was due to the lack of a certain version of .NET, but I am not 100% sure. Could you please advise on the system requirement of this driver? I have enclosed a copy of the log file for your review.

Let me share with you that looking into your case I found that your laptop has support for Operating Systems (OS) for Windows® XP up to Windows® Vista, newer versions of OS may not have full drivers support.
Intel® RST, for instance, will need a newer chipset to support its installation. for example: Intel® 200 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI/RAID Controller, you can review the platforms supported requirements on the following link:
I am working on a similar kind of issue, but with RAID, on a motherboard with the Intel X58 chipset including an ICH10R RAID controller.
I am guessing that when you tried this, you understandably tried the latest release, 18.104.22.1685, or thereabouts. You might instead try an earlier release.
So far, I am having good results with RST version 22.214.171.1242. I had been using an earlier release, 126.96.36.1993, but those (apparently) were old enough that the Fall Creators Update replaced them with ones in the 14.x.x.x arena which did not work for me - system instability, crashes, and so on.
