ICH9R support dropped in latest RST driver packages

I just installed Windows 8 RTM and tried installing RST drivers for my RAID array. The latest drivers do not support ICH9R however. Is this intentional?

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2922&CC_0106 is not supported in the .inf however PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2929&CC_0106 is

The drivers on the website that do support this chipset are very outdated too. Luckily I found some old drivers on my PC (iata_enu_10.8.0.1003)

I had previously been running Windows 8 Release Preview and don't remember running into any issues installing these drivers. Maybe my memory is poor though, as iata_enu_10.8.0.1003.exe was in the folder I named 'win8' with a bunch of other drivers.

The Intel Rapid Storage website gives the impression this chip should be supported.

  • Intel® ICH9M AHCI controller hub
  • Intel® 82801IR/IO controller hub (ICH9R/DO) - RAID and AHCI

  • Intel® ICH9M-E SATA RAID/AHCI controller hub
  • Intel® ICH9M AHCI controller hub
  • Intel® 82801IR/IO Controller Hub (ICH9R/DO) - RAID and AHCI

It would be nice to have the latest drivers for this if possible or some update on whether this is intentional.

If you have a RAID array, the device id's you've quoted are irrelevant. Device ID's ending in CC_0106 are for AHCI not RAID. The device ID for an ICH9R chipset set for RAID should be: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2822&CC_0104

As far as I know, only ICH7 support has been dropped from the 11.6 RST package.

I also haven't been able to update past 10.8.0.1003 on my ICH9R motherboard (Asus IPIBL-LB). I have been trying each new RST driver release for almost a year now. Is it just a glitch or was support dropped?

So, which drivers works the best for your ICH9R? Stable 8.8, suggested 9.6 or latest 10.8 with ICH9R support?

thanks,

Your memory may be right about win8-pre-release working, but win8-RTM not. I see similar issue on ICH9R abit IP35 mbd with ACHI v 7.5.0.1017 ich9r in a very old 2008 bios. A win7-64sp1 dvd sees all 5 drives a-ok, but both my win8-64 dvds (pre-release, and full-release) see only the 2 dvd-drives: no hard-drives! So it keeps asking for drivers. I tried all the following 64-bit F6 drivers: 10.8, 11.6 , and any others I could find. I tried all the various names of devices it found: 82801, ich9r, intel sata raid, etc, but none satisfied win8 installer. So without seeing any hard-drives at all, win8 install could not proceed. So I'm installing win7-64, which sees all the drives (JBOD, no fake-raid) and installs just fine without asking for any drivers at all. Upon first boot of w7-64, the devmgmt.msc shows version 8.6.2.1015 for "Intel ich8r/ich9r/ich104/do sata raid controller". So next, I'll try win8-64 upgrade and maybe that will work. So far I have not needed to upgrade the bios, but I may need to as I see "AHCI bios not installed" on POST screen (not sure what that means). I found some 3rd-party bios that has newer ahci, as the mbd mfg, abit, is defunct.

I also have some optiplex755's where it too me two weeks to get them to boot XP-sp3 from a fake-raid mirror. I had to install a 3.5-inch diskette-drive, and use a 720-k (NOT 1.44meg) formatted floppy. And the older 10.8 drivers as well. At least newer bioses are available from Dell (tho they show A19 as newest for xp, and A21 as newest for vista... go figure).

I had same problem: I had Windows 7 on 2 RAID disks. I booted into Windows 7 and upgraded to Windows 8 (x64, Enterprise). After the succesful upgrade, I found one unknown device for a RAID controler... Sigh.

I tried many different versions, mostly from the Intel side, that promissed Windows 8 support. Sadly, it did not work on my Asus P5k-E board.

The device identified itself as: "PCI\VEN_197B&DEV_2363&SUBSYS_824F1043&REV_03"

The driver that finally did install succesful came from the Asus site: http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=P5K-E&p=1&os=17 http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=P5K-E&p=1&os=17 .

There you can download:

After installation I have the following storage controllers:

- Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller

Enjoy? Peace!

Update

I found that the SOFTWARE from the Asus site does NOT work on Windows 8 x64. The drivers do, but not the utility tool.

BUT one of my Intel-driver trials left me with Intel's management tool for RAID (from which the drivers did not work). This utility DOES work with the Asus drivers

I have this Intel Rapid Storage Technology tool installed to manage my RAID0:

Intel Rapid Storage Technology 11.6.0.1030 (c) 2009-2012, Intel Corporation.

Good luck

This info is great! It saves me from having to install Windows 8 and later on finding that I need to make some changes to my hardware.

To me, (Asus Maximus Formula), the latest intel driver that works is 10.8.

I've tried >=11.2 but none of them work. It seems that the driver doesn't support ICH9R as it's not listed (you can check trying to force the driver installation and the list skips 9R; even worst, some drivers has 9 mobile support, but not 9R).

It's a shame for a company like Intel to have this kind of support. Next time it'll be AMD for me. It's not the same level of performance, but better price/performance AND better support.

Leaving out ICH9R support is a serious omission from the 11.7.0.1013 RST package as there doesn't seem to be any up to date drivers for Windows 8 or Windows 7 for this storage controller.

Looking back through the previous drivers you have to go back to the old 8.9.0.1023 matrix drivers for ICH9R support now which wasn't the case before.

I'm currently running 10.8.0.1003 with my Intel SSD but I can't find any link to download this version if I need to re-install windows in the future

You can get these and more actual Intel AHCI/RAID drivers from here:

Had a go installing Windows 8 on my MSI X48 board with a Core2Duo E8600 processor and Intel 520 SSD.

it seems the only compatible drivers are the ones contained in the inf download off the intel website:

No RST drivers on the Intel website will install
