Recently I've had some consultancy work done by Microsoft, to design a high-availability SQL 2008 cluster. The suggested hardware configuration is five servers, each with quad socket E7440 and 64 GB RAM. Vendors given that specification have replied with dual socket X5550 systems. What are the pros and cons of these processors in a MS SQL environment?
