H2300JF / S2600JF seems to be running hot

Hi, I have a H2300JF chassis with a S2600JF system board and dual e5-2690's in it. Surprisingly, the back of the system is hot enough that I can't really hold my hand on it for even a second. The server is in performance mode but it isn't under any load at all. I'm running debian and for some reason lm-sensors will not show the core temps. The best I can do is get the output from ipmitools which is I think the same info from the BMC:

# ipmitool sdr type temp

SSB Therm Trip | 0Dh | ok | 7.1 |

BB Inlet Temp | 20h | ok | 7.1 | 32 degrees C

HSBP Temp | 21h | ok | 64.1 | 28 degrees C

SSB Temp | 22h | ok | 7.1 | 71 degrees C

BB BMC Temp | 23h | ok | 7.1 | 59 degrees C

P1 VR Temp | 24h | ok | 7.1 | 43 degrees C

IB QDR Temp | 25h | ok | 7.1 | 54 degrees C

Exit Air Temp | 2Eh | ok | 7.1 | 64 degrees C

HSBP PSOC | 29h | ok | 15.1 | 33 degrees C

Powerville Temp | 2Fh | ok | 12.2 | 76 degrees C

PS1 Temperature | 5Ch | ok | 10.1 | 35 degrees C

PS2 Temperature | 5Dh | ok | 10.2 | 43 degrees C

P1 Therm Margin | 74h | ok | 3.1 | -30 degrees C

P1 Therm Ctrl % | 78h | ok | 3.1 | 0 unspecified

P1 DTS Therm Mgn | 83h | ok | 3.1 | -30 degrees C

P1 VRD Hot | 90h | ok | 3.1 |

DIMM Thrm Mrgn 1 | B0h | ok | 7.1 | -50 degrees C

DIMM Thrm Mrgn 2 | B1h | ok | 7.1 | -51 degrees C

Agg Thrm Mgn 1 | C8h | ok | 7.1 | 1 degrees C

So does this show the temperature of the processors?

The Powerville temperature especially seems high. I think that is the Ethernet controller. Any idea why that would be so hot?

Also, what is the SSB Temp? That seems high too. Thanks. -- Bud

Hi, just came across your post. I have a H2216JFJR running E5-2670's and have been tracking down this issue for awhile. Can you tell me your system airflow output (CFM)?

My servers were running at 14-16CFM, my temps were extremely high, and I was having an issue keeping an add-on PCIE card stable. I've contacted Intel support, but haven't really gotten anywhere. As a stop gap to aid in testing, I've adjusted the Fan PWM Offset to 100 in the BIOS.

The end result is that the fans are running at full tilt (60 CFM). After a few hours as such, here are my reported temps. I would be very interested in learning why the CFM isn't adjusting to internal temperatures.

# ipmitool sdr type temp

SSB Therm Trip | 0Dh | ok | 7.1 |

BB Inlet Temp | 20h | ok | 7.1 | 30 degrees C

HSBP Temp | 21h | ok | 64.1 | 22 degrees C

SSB Temp | 22h | ok | 7.1 | 49 degrees C

BB BMC Temp | 23h | ok | 7.1 | 40 degrees C

P1 VR Temp | 24h | ok | 7.1 | 34 degrees C

IB QDR Temp | 25h | ok | 7.1 | 40 degrees C

Exit Air Temp | 2Eh | ok | 7.1 | 37 degrees C

HSBP PSOC | 29h | ok | 15.1 | 34 degrees C

LAN NIC Temp | 2Fh | ok | 12.2 | 53 degrees C

PS1 Temperature | 5Ch | ok | 10.1 | 30 degrees C

PS2 Temperature | 5Dh | ok | 10.2 | 31 degrees C

P1 Therm Margin | 74h | ok | 3.1 | -46 degrees C

P2 Therm Margin | 75h | ok | 3.2 | -49 degrees C

P1 Therm Ctrl % | 78h | ok | 3.1 | 0 unspecified

P2 Therm Ctrl % | 79h | ok | 3.2 | 0 unspecified

P1 DTS Therm Mgn | 83h | ok | 3.1 | -46 degrees C

P2 DTS Therm Mgn | 84h | ok | 3.2 | -49 degrees C

P1 VRD Hot | 90h | ok | 3.1 |

P2 VRD Hot | 91h | ok | 3.2 |

DIMM Thrm Mrgn 1 | B0h | ok | 7.1 | -54 degrees C

DIMM Thrm Mrgn 2 | B1h | ok | 7.1 | -53 degrees C

DIMM Thrm Mrgn 3 | B2h | ok | 7.1 | -55 degrees C

DIMM Thrm Mrgn 4 | B3h | ok | 7.1 | -55 degrees C

Agg Thrm Mgn 1 | C8h | ok | 7.1 | 1 degrees C

In search of a quick fix, I've updated to the latest BMC release but no changes.
