Hi All

I am tryting to build my new Server and i have the following components

E5310

Intel S5000PAL Server board

8 * Hynx 512MB FBDIMM Modules

Lian Li Case (which supports EATX Boards)

Antec Earthewatts 500W Power Supply

I hav connected everything and the Lian Li Case has cables for the following and i am not sure where to plug these on the motherbaord.

Power LED ( 3-Pin Connector)

Power Switch (2-Pin Connector)

Reset Switch (2-Pin Connector)

HDD LED (2-Pin Connector)

I have connected the the main Power Connector and CPU Power Connector to the motherbaord and when i powered it on i see the Blue (initiall) and then the green light at the back of the board.

How ever in order to start the machine i need to connect the ower switch or use the jumber cable ( which i am not aware of or not comfortable with).

I am using the reference document from http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s5000pal/sb/s5000pal_tps_v1_9.pdf http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s5000pal/sb/s5000pal_tps_v1_9.pdf

And in Page 15 i have connected the W and X from my mower supply.

Thanks

Good that you've already found the right document. On page 15 of TPS, front control panel cables go to CC. The pin definitions are on page 52. In your case, you should connect:

Power LED ( 3-Pin Connector): 1-5

Power Switch (2-Pin Connector): 11-13

Reset Switch (2-Pin Connector): 15-17

HDD LED (2-Pin Connector): 7-9

Hi Edward Zhao,

Thanks a lot for your reply..

When i connected the Power Switch(2-Pin) and Reset Switch ( 2-pin) to the pins as mentioned in the Document i don;t see any thing on the screen and

when i powered it i saw a Blue Light initially and then it truned to green and then to Amber which indicates there is some serious error.

I am only using one CPU. I will try to swap the CPU to the other socket and will give it a shot. I hope i can use a single CPU though this board has slots for 2 CPUs.

Also i am not using any additional cooling fans etc. I am using the Heat sink that came with the Processor and the Case it self has got 3 X 120mm fans which are connected to the power supply.

Again thanks a lot for your help..

Regards

Mars

If you're using only one CPU, it must be installed in CPU_1 slot. You may also want to check if your board revision supports Xeon 5300 series processor: http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/CS-023585.htm.

Hi,

I am able to boot and use an existing OS to use this Server build and everything works fine. I will installing a Linux Server on this machine. Thanks a lot for your support.

I have few questions reg the heat generated by this processor. As i am using a non Intel Chasis when i touched the Heat Sink it was hot after 5 min i am not sure whether i need to put another fan over the heat sink. I have already got 3 fans ( one for the Hard Drives , one at the IO Ports of the case and one direct above the Board where the PCI-X slot is located (though i didn't have any PCI Cards installed on this board)

Is there a way to know the CPU and Core temeratures readings using an Utility ?? If so from where i can download this utility?

Also the BIOS version installed on this Borad is : S5000.86B.01.0045 Build Date: 05/23/06

I am planning to update the BIOS to latest update S5000PAL_DOS_Package_98_65_48 which i have downloaded from Intel Site.Hopefully i don't run into any other issues.

Also my case came with an External IO Panel which has two USB slots and one 1934 slot and one for audio.

I checked the documentation for connecting these pins on to the motherboard ( documentation talks abt one 2 X 5 hader on the server board J1J1 on page 58) how ever i cannot locate this J1J1 in any of the diagrams. could you pls provide more details reg this..

Thanks

1. You can download and install http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2363&DwnldID=18414&lang=eng Intel® Active System Console to get sensor readings

2. Check connector AA on TPS page 15

Mixing processors is not recommended. There are pretty strict requirements on what processors work together. Identical revision, core voltage, bus speed - even the core stepping must be within one rev. See page 25 of the TPS at

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s5000pal/sb/CS-022640.htm

Hi,

In E5310 Series there are three versions available.

Spec Stepping

SLAEM G0

SLACB B3

SL9XR B3

The Manual says "Mixed Processor Stepping is supported. How ever the stepping of one porcessor cannot be greather than the one stepping back the other". What does this mean ??

Can i mix SLAEM with the other two ?? or SLAEM cannot be mixed with any other except SLAEM..

Thanks

hi,

Use below link to check the compatibility

BTW, you cant mix the different family processor

I don't think you can mix B3 and G0 stepping. The rule is you can only mix steppings within one of each other, if I recall correctly

Hi,

I am planning to add a raiser card so that i can add a Graphics card.

What are the compatible raiser cards that i can get.

Is this a compatible card ??

"Intel AHJPCIRISER Combo PCI-E PCI-X Full Height Riser" ?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-AHJPCIRISER-Combo-PCI-E-PCI-X-Full-Height-Riser-/110215984334?pt=COMP_EN_Servers&hash=item19a96274ce http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-AHJPCIRISER-Combo-PCI-E-PCI-X-Full-Height-Riser-/110215984334?pt=COMP_EN_Servers&hash=item19a96274ce

Thanks

No this riser AHJPCIRISER is not for the S5000PAL board. Check the http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s5000pal/sb/CS-022659.htm Configuration Guide for a correct riser.

Thanks a lot for the info Edward.

I ordered the Riser Card "ASR15XXLPRIS" and hopefully it should work.

It's mentioned in the Support guide.

Thanks again.
