How to convert RAID 1 to Recovery Volume?

I have setup RAID 1 in my computer. In the Intel Storage Matrix Help section it says about converting RAID 1 to Recovery volume. But there is no further information available on how to convert it or its benefits.

What exactly does the Recovery Volume do?
