INTEL RMS25JB080 does not see hdd SEAGATE ST2000NM0045

Good afternoon, INTEL RMS25JB080 does not see hdd SEAGATE ST2000NM0045. HDD sas3 in it can be a problem? And perhaps in the future supports of these devices in the SAS2 mode?

INTEL RMS25JB080 checked on other HDD, works normally. The problem turns out with HDD ST2000NM0045.

As you were able to correctly guess this particular RAID card has a data transfer rate of 6GB/s which is the transfer speed for the SAS2 protocol. SAS3 goes up to 12GB/s and looks like we are in front of a compatibility issue here. In the following URL https://ark.intel.com/products/60286/Intel-Integrated-RAID-Module-RMS25JB080 https://ark.intel.com/products/60286/Intel-Integrated-RAID-Module-RMS25JB080 you can see the technical specifications for this RAID card and the supported data rate is 6GB/s.

 

 

Final consideration is that if for any reason you would be able to make the SAS3 HDD work on this RAID controller it most likely won't be stable or would work at a reduced data rate which will be a waste of recourses.

I don't want it to force to work in the sas3 mode, it is necessary for me that he worked in the sas2 mode. SAS3 and sas2 are compatible?

Hello Alexey,

By design this RMS25JB080 RAID controller module is only compatible with SAS2 devices (data transfer rate of 6Gb/s). SAS3 has a data transfer rate of 12Gb/s so SAS3 devices will run at half their speed if connected to a SAS2 controller if recognized (best case scenario) or not recognized at all.

If you look at the following document which is the tested hardware list for RMS25JB080 http://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/rms25kb0x0_rms25jb0x0_thol_v31.pdf http://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/rms25kb0x0_rms25jb0x0_thol_v31.pdf

on page 9 it shows all the tested hdds. Unfortunately the Seagate ST2000NM0045 doesn't show up under this list meaning the compatibility is nor tested or guarantied.

So looks like you will need to continue using the working hdds.
