Intel® Entry Storage System SS4000-E - RAID 10 error & Not booting

Good day,

One of our Intel SS4000-E storage systems, is not accessible any more, yet we can ping the device, the Web Console does not fully load, it loads to this point and does not show the login field, see screen shot below:

The unit is fitted with 4 x 500GB SATA drives configured in RAID 10.

I have manually removed each drive and plugged them into a Windows PC and it appears that drive 3 has failed, drives 1, 2, and 4 I can see under disk management, but obviously cannot see the data as a result of the file system format that is foreign to Windows not even with an ext2/ext3 viewer. The system led is showing solid "Yellow" and the global HDD led is flashing "Yellow". The individual HDD led's are solid green.

I have replaced drive 3 with a new working 500GB HDD, and yet I still cannot access the complete web console to login in to the device, when drive 3 is replaced, the system led is solid green, global HDD led is flashing yellow and the individual HDD led's solid green.

How can the above problem be rectified?

Can you boot the system with all 4 HDDs removed? What's your current firmware version?

Good day,

With all 4 HDD's removed, the device does not boot. System Led is solid Yellow, and Global HDD Led is not on.

Also at this state, a ping request result in destination host unreachable.

To my knowledge the firmware have not been updated, I am not sure what the current firm version is, as I cannot login in to the web console, see device details below.

Device model # : INNS04-4200.

Ver: V1.0E

Device serial # : CZBC7182432

I have reset the unit as per http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/ss4000-e/sb/cs-022318.htm http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/ss4000-e/sb/cs-022318.htm

Now the unit is showing the "System Initialization" screen where it asks for HDD's to be added. There is no option to proceed unless the HDD's are inserted, the following is shown when truing to proceed : "Please install disks first" . If I insert the HDD's, then the unit indicates that all data will be lost during the System Initialization process.

Now you can insert HDDs one my one and initialize the system. I don't think you can get your old data back since you've already replace 3 out of 4 HDDs. Also, it's highly recommended to update to latest FW after you complete initializing the system: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2366&DwnldID=16833 http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2366&DwnldID=16833

I think here is a misunderstanding.

Drive 1, Drive 2 and Drive 4 is still working. I only suspect that drive 3 is not working.

Thus, in the RAID 10 array, the data should still be available as Data on Drive 1 is mirrored on Drive 2 and Data on Drive 3 is mirrored on Drive 4.

How can I have the RAID 10 rebuild on the system?

Oh sorry for the misunderstanding...

You may try to boot the system with 3 good HDDs installed, and then perform a reset. If you still can't access the web UI, your system may be affected by http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/ss4000-e/sb/CS-023743.htm TA 847: Loss of system access issue.
