Intel Processor Identification reports Engineering Sample for Xeon Gold 5th gen

Hello, is it possible that the microcode for Intel Xeon 5th gen is not yet integrated with the latest intel processor identification utility or intel diagnostic tool?

It is reporting engineering sample on processor identification and failed in brandstring test on diagnostic. however, popular third party apps shows good information.

Hi FrostyHand,

Please be inform that the Intel® Processor Identification Utility reporting incorrect message of engineering sample is a known issue that will be fixed in the next release.

You may want to refer link below for your own reference:

Hello, Based on the link provided, I can see that only Intel Xeon Raptor Lake on the xeon series will be incorrectly identified as engineering sample on the knowledge based. Moreover, the release notes of IPIU 7 indicates full support for 4th generation xeon only.

Please confirm if the 5th generation xeon processors (emerald rapids) will be flagged incorrectly by IPIU as engineering sample as well?

I'm seeing an incorrect version of stepping code in CPUZ but on HWINFO the stepping code is correct and indicating its a production unit.

Hello FrostyHand,

Hope this message finds you well.

First and foremost, we apologize for the misinformation shared. The easiest way to identify if you have an Engineering Sample (ES) processor produced by Intel is to examine the processor topside markings using the following methods:

  • If the part does not have a brand string (e.g., “Intel® Core™ i9-9900K”) or base frequency markings, it is not a production part.
  • If you don’t find ink or laser markings, the processor may be an unmarked ES processor.
  • If the part is labeled “Intel Confidential,” it is an ES part.

For more information, you can refer to the following link: Definition of Engineering Sample (ES) Processors and How to Identify...

If you confirm that you have an engineering sample CPU, contact your vendor or place of purchase. If you received an engineering sample processor instead of a production processor and your vendor refuses to assist, consider contacting your local consumer agency or civil authority for help. Please note that engineering sample parts (ES) are not eligible for warranty replacement.

Regarding whether the Emerald Rapids processors will be flagged incorrectly by IPIU, this issue can sometimes occur if the utility is not updated to recognize new processor models or due to specific processor configurations. Currently, full support is available only for 4th Gen Xeon Scalable Processors, namely Sapphire Rapids (SP) and Xeon Max-series (SP-HBM).

Thank You & Best Regards,

Hello, if the statement is true, then the 6th-generation Granite Rapids (released in September 2024)—rather than the 5th-generation models (released in December 2023)—would be the ones not recognized by IPIU. Since IPIU 7.1.8 was released on February 7, 2024, we would expect it to provide at least some support for the 5th-generation models.  Therefore, if IPIU 7.1.8 is flagging these 5th-generation units as engineering samples, it strongly suggests they are indeed engineering samples. Could you please confirm if this understanding is correct?

Additionally, assuming the identification markings are valid, is there a possibility that the microcode on these units has been modified?

Hello thank you for the reply, CPU is currently mounted on the board and we are still currently running some tests. I will provide once done but I believed the markings are good.

Please confirm if values in the firmware level of intel CPU can be spoof? yes or no?

Hi FrostyHand,

Thank you for your reply. This is noted, we will wait for your update. Regarding the values in the firmware level, we have to verify first all the details before making any statement on this. We look forward for your update and we shall verify this for you.

Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Hello I have an Intel Xeon 6544Y and have looked at the processor and it does not read as an ES "Intel Confidential"  Spec Code Q14S.

It reads as  Intel Gold Xeon 6544Y

Spec Code SRN6R  Just like the example shown below.

Intel Processor Identification reports Engineering Sample for Xeon Gold 5th gen

Intel Processor Identification  IPIU 7.1.8  test reads as ES on all I test.  Can you confirm that the Current Software version is not capable of testing 5th Gen Xeons presently and needs to be updated to fix the issue?

Hello Team,

Greetings from Intel!

Thank you for your patience. Regarding your query, I would like to inform you that the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool is only compatible with up to 3rd Gen Xeon processors. Newer generations may not work as expected. As you can see, the 5th gen is not listed as a compatible CPU (at the bottom of the page).

For Datacenter CPUs, we recommend using the Intel® Data Center Diagnostic Tool for Intel® Xeon® Processors for Windows* to perform integrity checks.

Based on the CPU markings you shared (FPO and SPEC), I would like to inform you that the CPU is a tray processor, typically available through Intel distributors.

Additionally, as you mentioned, there are no markings indicating "Engineering Sample," so this CPU appears to be a Tray processor, as per the article How to Identify My Intel® Xeon® Processor Markings for Warranty....

Best regards,

Amina

Hi Can you answer this for me?

For Datacenter CPUs, we recommend using the Intel® Data Center Diagnostic Tool for Intel® Xeon® Processors for Windows* to perform integrity checks.  Will this software tell the user if the part being tested is in fact a Production Processor and NOT an ES?

Since the Software is terrible outdated as the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool is only compatible with up to 3rd Gen Xeon processors. Newer generations may not work as expected along with the Intel Processor Identification Utility Software not being able to test 5th Gen Xeons when will Intel update the dated software?  Presently its 3 Generations behind.

Is there an update planned and if so when is it expected to be released?

Hello Matthew888,

Greetings!!

If you need to verify the status of a processor, you might consider using Intel's Processor Identification Utility, which can provide detailed information about the processor, including its model, stepping, and other characteristics.

We do not have specific information for updating their diagnostic tools, such as the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool or the Intel Processor Identification Utility, to support newer generations of Xeon processors beyond the 3rd Gen. Intel typically updates its software tools to support new hardware, but the timing and specifics of these updates can vary.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding software updates, I recommend checking Intel's official website. They can provide the latest details on any planned updates or new releases for their diagnostic tools.
