Issues with upgrading the server S1600JP from Windows 2012 to Windows 2016

Last 10 days are trying to upgrade our servers from Windows 2012 to Windows 2016 with no success. Even though we are following the instructions and also checking many discussion forums, we are unable to upgrade the servers properly. We are not upgrading the servers in terms of upgrade the current system, but we are installing Windows 2016 from the scratch on empty disks.

The configuration of the servers is:

Board S1600JP4

8/16GB RAM

500GB HD in RAID 1 ESRT2 on SAS/SATA controler

We are trying to install the build SW_DVD9_Win_Server_STD_CORE_2016_64Bit_English_-4_DC_STD_MLF_X21-70526.ISO

The servers used to run flawlessly on 8GB RAM on Windows 2012. However we were unable to do through the installation process with mere 8GB RAM. The process terminated many times unfinished – or went to new BSOD (the light blue with the frownie). Also, after first reboot, both RAID1 disks went to OFFLINE mode.

Therefore we added another 8GB RAM and after this the process of installation finished correctly, but after installing all of the updates that are pushed to the server, we have been observing non-standard behavior of the server.

For example shutdown of the server when we try to restart it or missing New Directory option in while right clicking context, also the shortcut Shift+CTRL+N (for creating new directory) is not working. The only way to create a new directory is to use CMD with mkdir or third-party software (Total Commander etc). WE have followed the instructions on this where the advice was to create new key in registry hive HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ with default value {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719},

however the key was already there and no change has therefore been made. The server acts slowly and installation with updates takes approx. 6 hours

We had suspected wrong checksum, but checking it with fciv.exe showed that this is not an issue:

C:\Users>fciv SW_DVD9_Win_Server_STD_CORE_2016_64Bit_English_-4_DC_STD_MLF_X21-70526.ISO

//

// File Checksum Integrity Verifier version 2.05.

We tried also to install also Windows 2019 (SW_DVD9_Win_Server_STD_CORE_2019_64Bit_English_DC_STD_MLF_X21-96581.ISO) on this server and this installation went very swiftly and smoothly. The installation including all updates took less than 30 minutes and we did not experience any of the intermittent issues described in the installation of Windows 2016.

We would be grateful for any info how to proceed with correct installation of Windows 2016 on this server or another advice.

With kind regards

Pavel
