No display on add-in graphics when connected to S2600CW2 board

Jump to solution

Hi and wish you all a very healthy, happy and prosperous new year.

We've supplied Cottonwood pass [S2600CW2] (http://ark.intel.com/products/83027/Intel-Server-Board-S2600CW2 Intel® Server Board S2600CW2 Specifications) server board with Intel P4304XXMFEN2 (http://ark.intel.com/products/83031/Intel-Server-Chassis-P4304XXMFEN2 Intel® Server Chassis P4304XXMFEN2 Specifications) enclosure to our customer along with Nvidia Quadro K420 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-desktop-gpus.html Quadro GPUs for Desktop and Mac Pro Workstations|NVIDIA) graphic adapter. The processor used is single Intel Xeon E5-1620 v3 (http://ark.intel.com/products/82763/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5-1620-v3-10M-Cache-3_50-GHz Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-1620 v3 (10M Cache, 3.50 GHz) Specifications).

Though we get the display from the onboard VGA port, we do not get any video from the Nvidia adapter. We've tested the card on S2400SC2 board (http://ark.intel.com/products/61037/Intel-Server-Board-S2400SC2 Intel® Server Board S2400SC2 Specifications) and is working fine. We've populated the card on the PCI-e x16 slot associated with CPU1 slot.

The BIOS is updated to the latest and it shows:

Add-in Video Adapter: <<span style="color: # c4bd97;">Disabled> (greyed out)

Onboard Video: <<span style="color: # c4bd97;">Enabled> (greyed out)

Legacy VGA socket: <<span style="color: # c4bd97;">CPU socket 1> (greyed out)

The graphic adapter heat sink fan is also not rotating when connected and the server is powered. The OS is Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and it does not come-up in the device manager as well, even as an un-recognised device. We even tried with Nvidia GeForce 210 adapter, and the result is same.

Please provide the next set of action as a resolution to this.

Thanks and regards

Hello, Girish,

Here are our recommendations for this issue:

- Install the latest firmware update for the server system.

- Test a different type of device on the PCIe slot to narrow the issue.

- Make sure you are following the correct cabling for the card (power cables).

- Make sure your power supplies are sufficient to provide energy to the card.

Hi Dan,

Good morning and a very happy new year to you.

Thanks a ton for your inputs. We found that the end-customer had not connected the CPU2 power (though only CPU1 is populated). On connecting the CPU2 power the Nvidia Quadro K420 started giving display.

This baffles us since only one CPU is populated, do we still need to connect CPU2 power? An explanation would be appreciated.

Hello Girish,

To answer your question, both CPU power connectors need to be connected in order for all the PCIe slots to work even only one CPU is installed

Hello Dan,

Thanks. Noted. We would make it a practice to connect both CPU power even when single CPU is populated.

This call may be considered closed for posterity. Thanks once again for your time.

Thanks
