PEM_SMB Connector

Hello everyone,

What is the purpose of the PEM_SMB connector and what happens if it is not hooked up? I found the PCIe drive kit for my S2600CW series board and the card has a PEM_SMB connector but the board doesn't.

Thanks

Ray

I was able to track down the FUP8X25S3NVDK for my S2600CW series server. The kit is missing the PEM cable and it is missing the instructions. Can you supply a part number for the PEM cable and a link to the manual? The drives I plan on using are Intel 2.5" NVMe drives.

Thanks

Hello RSump1,

Thank you for your response.

Since you are planning on using SSDs, we recommend that you use the PCIe cables included with Combo backplane kit for PCIe* SSD / NVMe drive support.

Please find below additional information about this configuration in the Intel® Server Chassis P4304XXMFEN2 & P4304XXMUXX Product Family System Integration and Service Guide.

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/server-products/server-boards/P4000_CW_ST_ServiceGuide.pdf

For S2600CW Server Board Family: One PCIe* SSD cable for drive port 0-3 (shipped with FUP8X25S3NVDK). Refer to the table in Page 59.

For additional instructions, please refer to section 2.3.5 Upgrading the Fixed Drive Storage to 8x2.5” PCIe* SSD (NVMe) Combo Drive Bay Storage.

If you need additional details about the PEM cable, please let me know. It is worth mentioning that the PEM cable should be included with the accessory kit.

Good evening,
I looked high and low for the PEM_SMB cable and it seems to be missing from this kit. Is it necessary and if it is, is this something Intel can help me with?
I also looked in the S2600CW TPS and cannot for the life of me see where that cable would plug in, can you help me with that? Will the connector on the board go by a different name?

Thanks
Ray

Hello RSump1,

Thank you for the update.

Since the PEM cable is usually included with the kit, please allow us to review this incident.

We will update this thread to address your inquiries as soon as possible.

If possible, please provide us with the specific Intel® Server Board you are using. You can review the Intel® Server Board S2600CW Family here https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/series/78561/intel-server-board-s2600cw-family.html.

I am using the Intel S2600CW2SR motherboard in an Intel P4304xxmuxx chassis.
The kit I purchased does not have the PEM_SMB cable. I looked everywhere. Is it necessary?

Thanks

Hello RSump1,

I would like to update this thread.

The PEM cable should be included with the kit. Our recommendation is that contact the place of purchase to obtain additional details about this. PBA# G22462-003

The PEM cable is needed only if you are going to use the ports on the motherboard and not to RAID controller or module, and to use more than one backplane.

Refer to page 82/83 of the System Integration and Service Guide
https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/server-products/server-boards/P4000_CW_ST_ServiceGuide.pdf

Regarding the location of the connector on the motherboard, please see the picture attached of the HSBP I2C connector.
Also found in the Technical Product Specification, page 19.
https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/server-products/server-boards/S2600CW_TPS.pdf

You can find more information on the SMBUS connector on the Enclosure Cabling Guide for Intel® C610 Series Chipset Based Server Systems with Hot-Swap Drive Enclosures page 16.
https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/server-products/c610_enclosure_cabling_guide_v11.pdf

I hope you find this information helpful.

Hello RSump1,

This is a follow-up post to know if there is anything else we can help you with.

In summary, if you are going to use more than one backplane, install a RAID card or module, then the cable is required. We recommend that you contact the Place of Purchase to obtain this cable.

It is worth mentioning that you can use it to install firmware updates in the future for this Field-Replaceable unit (FRU), FUP8X25S3NVDK.
