RAID Controller & Backplane Compatibility for Non-Standard Setup

I have a R2208WTTC1 server chassis which is equipped with a RMS25PB080 raid controller connected to a single G97156-371 backplane via two internal SFF-8087 -> SFF-8463 cables.  This gets me 8x2.5 drives.

I also have a RS25SB008 controller which has two external SFF-8088 ports.  My question is in regards to compatibility if I try something "odd".

If I were to use two SFF-8088 -> SFF-8643 cables and a second G97156-371 (A2U8X25S3HSDK) 8x2.5 cage, would I be able to connect them together into a working configuration for an additional 8x2.5 drives? If so, would the I2C jumper cable between the two backplanes be required?  In this scenario, I would "loop" the 8088->8643 cables out and back into the chassis to connect them to the backplane.

I realize this is odd and completely non-standard but I already have most of these parts and can save some money if this will work.

Hello SRodr10,

Thank you for contacting Intel Customer Support.

In regard to your question, we can not guarantee it will work since we have not tested on our end and as you mentioned this is a non-standard configuration.

What we recommend is checking the list of compatible products for the A2U8X25S3HSDK.

The link you provided did not have any specific compatibility information, only general info, so I would like it kept open so others may reply.

Hello SRodr10,

We can keep the thread open for the next 7 days.

About the configuration you want to attempt is not supported for this server board. Non of the RMS25PB080 nor RS25SB008 RAID cards show up as compatible for this particular board according to the Spare Parts configuration guide Intel S2600WT Product Family Config Guide 2.0 . Besides that, whenever you have 2 separate RAID controllers, you cannot mix RAID volumes between them. About the I2C cable functionality it is a follows:

I2C Functionality

The microcontroller has a master/slave I2C connection to the server board BMC. The microcontroller is not an IPMB compliant device. The BMC will generate SEL events by monitoring registers on the HSBP microcontroller for DRIVE PRESENCE, FAULT, and RAID REBUILD in progress

Hope this helps

At least one part of what you have said above is incorrect because the RMS25PB080 I already have installed in this server chassis with that server board has been working fine with the back plane for several years.

Hello SRodr10,

I have to apologize. You are correct, the RMS25CB080 does show up as a compatible RAID controller for this S2600WT system. Intel Server Board S2600WTT Product Specifications > compatible products > RAID modules. In such case the configuration you are trying is partially supported but there is no warranty about using a 2nd not supported RAID module will work correctly. It might create instability to the whole system

Hello, SRodr10,

We are following up further on this case, which is still open with a "RAID Controller & Backplane Compatibility for Non-Standard Setup "on the problem description.

We know that this is important for you to get it resolved, and it is also equally important for us to get you the right solution. Since we have not seen an update for a week, now, please, know we will get in contact with you next Tuesday to inform you that the thread will be closed; this is if there is still no answer from your side, by then.
