S1200BTL server motherboard and vmware esxi 5.1 raid

Hi,

I have Intel R1304BTLSHBN server with windows 2008 server istalled on two sata drives with raid 1 which i need to virtualize.

ESXi 5.1 does not support onboard raid controller, because i can only see two sata drives during installation process.

How can i install it on raid 1? The only drivers i could find for my motherboard was SAS Hardware RAID Driver for ESXi 5.

Do i need to buy additional raid controller that is compatible with esxi 5.1?

Thanks in advance!

Damian,

The S1200BTL server uses Intel ESRT2 or RST embedded RAID. ESRT2 or RST has driver support for Microsoft Windows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SuSE Linux Enterprise Server.

I don't believe Vmware supports ESRT2 or RST. You may want to check the Vmware HCL for a compatible RAID controller: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=io http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=io

John

It does support esxi 5.1, but only JBOD "raid" only, it does not recognize previously configured mirroring in my case.

Anyhow, i must buy RMS2AF040, to make this work. Is it compatible with my serverboard?

S1200BT is not listed as compatible boards, but at the end of the list there is "Intel Server Systems and ...".

Damian,

You should look at it from the perspective of what is compatible with your server board, not what is compatible with a RAID controller. The http://serverconfigurator.intel.com/sct_app.aspx# /SctMain Intel Server Configurator Tool will list hardware, memory and operating systems that are validated with your specific S1200BTL server board or system.

John

i've looked and didn't find my Intel server listed in Your configuration tool.

It looks like R1304BTLSHBN with Intel Server Board S1200BTL is EOL.

Regardless, I thought that who else is going to answer that specific Intel raid controller is combatible with specific Intel server board, but Intel employee:)

Thank you very much for helpful reply!

...but

just to be sure, this list:

http://www.esaa-members.com/app/webroot/recipes/56VMWR970000000000-R5.pdf http://www.esaa-members.com/app/webroot/recipes/56VMWR970000000000-R5.pdf

is not correct for Raid module i presume, but do i need additional network adapter for esxi 5.1, as it suggest?

"AXXRMS2AF040 is compatibe with S1200BTL." - is it compatible with esxi 5.1? I don't see it listed on the Vmware configurator...

Actually RMS2AF040 and AXXRMS2AF040 are the same thing. RMS2AF040 is the product name, while AXXRMS2AF040 is the product code when you place the order.

Sorry.

1)RMS2AF040 and AXXRMS2AF040 are the same product.

And This recipe is correct.

http://www.esaa-members.com/app/webroot/recipes/56VMWR970000000000-R5.pdf http://www.esaa-members.com/app/webroot/recipes/56VMWR970000000000-R5.pdf

AXXRMS2AF040 is compatible with esxi 5.1.

2)>>do i need additional network adapter for esxi 5.1, as it suggest?

I think it depends on the case.

How about you try this article?

http://virtual-drive.in/2012/11/16/enabling-intel-nic-82579lm-on-intel-s1200bt-under-esxi-5-1/ Enabling Intel NIC (82579LM) on Intel S1200BT under ESXi 5.1 | Virtual Drive

When there is a problem with the performance of the virtual network,

Could you add the NIC?
