S2400SC memtest86 UEFI bit fade errors

I have a S2400SC motherboard. Testing approved RAM, Samsung M393B2G70BH0-YH9 16GB ECC Registered Memory, using the Memtest86 v7.4 UEFI, I get a flood of bit fade errors (Test 10). The Memtest86 forum suggested that it might be a known bug in the Intel BIOS. In another forum posting, I saw a similar problem reported on various Intel MBs in the S2600 series. One individual reported that setting the BIOS to Optimize for UEFI fox it for him, but trying that, I still get a lot of errors.

The cpu is Intel E5-2450L (supports ECC RAM), and only 1 cpu is installed on the MB. I ran the tests using 1 core. I ran it again with 64GB installed (4 x 16GB), and again got a result showing 1024 errors in Test 10 only. The summary report shows

Lowest Error Address: 0x3FFFE018 (1023MB)

Highest Error Address: 0x3FFFF814 (1023 MB)

Bits in Error Mask: 00000000FFFFFFFF

Bits in Error - Total: 32 Min: 0 Max: 32

Max Contiguous Errors: 2

Thanks for any help in sorting this out.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

This is the latest System BIOS - 02.06.0006, which was updated with the EFI FW update Version: 02.06.0006 (Latest) Date: 7/20/2017.

Does the Confidence Test Utility properly test ECC Registered Memory, and in particular for bit fade and Row Hammer?

Thanks

Hello Aberdeen,

Thanks for the info provided.

In regards to the particular memory tests that PCT runs I couldn't find the info on the user guide: https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/intelserverboardefipctinstallationandoperatinginst.pdf https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/sb/intelserverboardefipctinstallationandoperatinginst.pdf

I will elevate the question and will let you know as soon we get updates.

Hello Aberdeen,

Thanks very much for your patience. We finally got a reply from our engineering department.

First about if the PCT tool is able to catch bit fade and Row Hammer looks like it does not. So if memtest found such errors we will trust it.

About the issue itself as you probably guessed it could be either the memory modules or the board itself. The average troubleshooting for this is as usual to make sure the modules are validated first, then try different modules on same board and then try same modules on another S2400SC board (if available). If you are able to try this please let us know the results. Another suggesting would be to run PCT to check the system for defect components installed or incorrect assembling.

We really appreciate your patience and hope this helps.

Regards

Sorry for the late reply. I have now been able to try the same RAM in another S2400SC system, and all the RAM passes both the UEFI bit fade and Row Hammer tests. I guess this means it is a motherboard problem. I also made a mistake using the Intel Motherboard Confidence Tool, and clicked to update the system information, which I thought the tool would do, but instead it was erased what was there so I could manually update it. Is there a way to restore the information in the system? What information do I need to find out if there is warranty coverage, and where do I physically find it on the server P4308SCMHGC?

Thanks for the help, and the follow ups.

Hi Doug,

The https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/multimedia/boardsandkits/5625/index.html Intel® Server Products Part Number or Serial Number Finder can help you on how to find the Part number and Serial Number on this server board:
  1. Start by selecting your server product.
  2. Choose from Pedestal or Rackmount depending on your product type.
  3. Sample image will be shown, look for similar markings in your product.
Once you find the information you update the case and I can check if the board still under warranty.

Please let me know your results.

I was able to get the S/N off the MB, and it is within the warranty period. I started filling out the RMA process. but I am not sure it was sent.

Thanks Jeremiah. Before filling out the form, it did show it has lots of life left for warranty, but I do not know if that info got incorporated into the file. I bought the server which was new, model P4308SC2MHGC which contains the S2400SC2 motherboard, but from an ebay seller.

Hi Doug,

Thank you for your update.

I see that in case 03275434, the Customer Support specialist already started the warranty process, seems to ok the fact that you purchase the Intel(R) Server System from an eBay Seller. Let's wait for the outcome of the process. I will follow up on the case.
