S2600CWR Board - All LEDs flashing

Trooper

I'm running a S2600CWR board, with latest firmware installed.

Twice this has happened - The server crashes, then all the LEDs on the board will flash simultaneously, about once or twice a second.

I've had to pull the power cord from the P/S for a minute, then it restarts normally.

If I just flip the power switch off then on, it doesn't come back. It just immediately starts flashing LEDs.

The BMC log only shows that power was removed.

Does anyone know what might cause this?

This may be related. I've also had the server reboot randomly. The BMC log again shows that power was removed. I've since added a power line conditioner and haven't seen the issue since. It was previously running on house power. But I've never had power issues with any other machine.

Thanks

Hello Tropper,

In addition to the information provided before, we would like to share with you the list of supported power supplies for the Intel® Server Board S2600CW Family for your future reference:

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/server-products/server-boards/S2600CW_P4000G_Configuration_Guide.pdf

Hello Trooper,

Thank you for contacting Intel Customer Support.

Please help us with proving some additional information:

1. Is this a new installation or your system was working normally before?

2. Can you please share with us the latest SEL logs of your server?

3. Was there any recent changes on the system? Have you tried testing different a different power supply?

4. On your post you mentioned that you recently installed a power line conditioner, have you tried testing your system by connecting it to the wall directly?

5. Please provide us more information about your system configuration, power supply and processor model, memory, etc.

You can find more information about the different LED lights here:

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/server-products/server-boards/S2600CW_TPS.pdf Page 85

We will be looking forward to your reply.

Thanks for the response.

This is a new system.

All components are new except the two processors, which were taken from another system.

I have uploaded a couple SEL logs and a couple debug files.

I saved then cleared the logs on 5/12 after the first event which occurred on or just before 5/7.

Then it happened again on 5/16 (I think it was).

The system was just recently built, so everything is new/changed.

I have not tried a different power supply, but that is next.

The current P/S is an EVGA; Model: 220-GA-0750-X1

I was waiting for it to happen again, but it has not.

I have not tried plugging directly into the wall.

I did review the document about LED indicators, but I did not see my symptom listed.

Hello Trooper,

We appreciate the time taken to provide us the SEL logs and the additional information.

Upon checking the logs we noticed that the latest entries are from 05/12/2021 00:11:56 with no power related errors. Since you mentioned that you have not experienced the issue again, you can keep monitoring your system and if the problem happens again, please provide us a new set of SEL logs and also try testing with another power supply.

If you wish I can follow up your case on 5/28/2021 in order to check that the issue did not happen again or if you wish a different date please let me know.

Best regards,

Hi Sergio

So far no more issues.

I was still wondering if Intel has an explanation for all LEDs blinking.

That symptom is not described in the documents.

But maybe with power issues, all bets are off as anything could happen.

Other than that, I think this is all set.

My fear was there was something wrong with the board, but I don't think that is the case.

Maybe an overly-sensitive power supply.

I still have not tried swapping P/S, as I would need to take one from a working system.

Which I have, but I do not have a spare P/S.

Thanks

Hello Tropper,

The problem regarding all the LEDs blinking can be related with power issues that you had in the past. Can you please let us know if you noticed this issue again or any other power related problems? If so, please feel free to share the SEL and debug logs.

Best regards,

Sergio S.

My issue appears to be a power supply issue.

I had another event where the server just powered off for no reason.

I eventually got it to power on, but got the blinking LEDs again.

I finally swapped the power supply with a similar server, and the symptoms are now on the other server.

And the first server is running fine, as of right now.

The P/S is brand new. I am going to request an RMA.

Thanks for all your help.

Bill

It would be nice to leave the thread open.

But it might be a week or so before I get the P/S replaced.

EVGA doesn't have a great RMA process.

I have a hunch as to why all the LEDs were blinking.

As my other board (S2600CO) did the same thing when using the bad power supply.

When the server is first powered on, all the LEDs blink once. I assume this is normal.

I suspect that just as the server powers on, the power supply stops delivering power.

So the server shuts down. Then the power supply gives power again, the LEDs blink, then the power supply shuts down again.

And this repeats over and over, and that is why all the LEDs blink on and off.

Hello Tropper,

We can leave this thread open as long as you need. We can send you a follow-up next with on 6/21/2021. If you prefer a different date, please let us know.

Additionally, as you mentioned, the problem of all the LEDs light blinking point to a bad power supply unit.

We will be looking forward to your response.

Hi Sergio

My apologies for the delay.

The new power supply does appear to have resolved the issue.

Although I’ve only had it installed for one day, I have repeatedly powered the server on/off without a single incident.

To your earlier point about using supported hardware – Lesson learned.

I will mark this post as Resolved.

Thanks again for all the responses.
