S3420GP and RAM

Hello,

I have a server mothebord S3420GP with 6 memory slots.

Now, I have 2 slots filled with these: 2x KINGSTON 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC CL9 DIMM with Thermal Sensor.

Is possible to use another 4 these RAMs? So I would have 24 GB RAM with 6 x 4 GB. Is this combination possible?

Or is possible to use 4 x KINGSTON 8GB DDR3 1333MHz CL9 ECC Dual Rank BOX.

So total memory size will be 32 GB RAM.

Thanks for any answers.

Memory population rules on S3420GP is kind of complicated.

If you're using a Xeon 3400 series processor, you can use either RDIMM (registered) or UDIMM (unbuffered), but you can't mix RDIMM and UDIMM. If you're using Core i3-500 series or Pentium G6950 processor, only UDIMM is supported. ECC is required for both RDIMM and UDIMM.

Now for RDIMM you can populate all six slots. For UDIMM you can use only four DIMMs, two each channel. # of DIMMs per channel will also affect the DIMM speed. Maximum memory capacity is 32GB RDIMM or 16GB UDIMM. For more details, see the S3420GP http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s3420gp/sb/CS-030742.htm Technical product specification, section 3.2.

You can also try the http://imct.intel.com/chooseprocessor.aspx?bid=S3420GP Memory Configuration Tool. It will tell you what memory combination you can use.

Last but not least, always select memory from the http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s3420gp/sb/CS-030738.htm Tested memory list.

Strange as it may sound, but memory listed as supported on http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s3420gp/sb/CS-030738.htm Tested memory list, does not really work. I had bought 32GB (8GB x 4) of make: Hynix, Model: HMT31GR7AFR4C-H9. And it just failed to be detected by the motherboard.

Hynix

HMT31GR7AFR4C-H9 8GB

HMT31GR7AFR4C-H9

Hynix

H5TQ2G43AFR-H9

Registered

I was trying to use it with 2 Intel motherboards (S3420GPLC & S3420GPLX) along with Intel Xeon 3430. I tried with both motherboards but it just wouldn't work.

I have tried this with 2 different DRAM vendors with same result and ended up doing an RMA :-(

Is there something special that you need to do when using Registered DRAM?

Thanks.

Regards / Shekhar

Do you get any beeps when booting the server? Did UDIMMs work on the same board? Also, did you try a different processor?

Have the same problem MB S3420GPLC

Trying to install four 8GB modules Samsung M393B1K70BH1-CH9 from tested memory list

And have 3 beeps, with old 4Gb Kingston all works fine

Disappointed at Intel has spent time and money wasted

Hi Forum , Hello Intel !

Whats going on here with this thread?

I Own a S3420GPV Board with 16 GB and Xeon 3470. Now I would like to upgrade to 32 GB.

As I read here in this thread the ram from the testet ram list is not working. Are there any news?

I dont want to order Kingston, Samsung or Hynix modules if they are not working as described above ...

Any solutions Intel ?

Thanks a lot,

Regards,

Filip

Besides DIMM model number, also check if the DRAM part number matches the list.

The 3420 chipset does not support 8GB dual rank DIMM's only 8GB quad rank modules.

And they must also be x8 not x4

OK I fixed this problem !

I tried modules 3 times , and now I ordered 4 8 MB modules of Kingston PC3-8500 1066 MHZ and they work like a charme ....

check this :

Hi,

I think this question might get better addressed in the Server Tech Support Forum. For future reference the thread can be found at: /message/124240# 124240 http://communities.intel.com/message/124240# 124240

Thanks,

I have an Intel S3420GP server board with a Intel Core i3 540 @ 3.07 ghz processor.

If I order 2 - x8 DDR3 1066 ECC Unbuffered quad rank UDIMM's - I know that I will be maxed out at 16gig. Will they work?

Thanks,

RTB

You should be able to configure your memory with the modules you listed before. Intel always recommends using http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/s3420gp/sb/CS-030738.htm validated components to avoid unforeseen issues.
