S5520HC EFI Optimized Boot

Hi,

I have difficulties with EFI Boot.

Long story short:

Having BIOS revision R0064 I'm trying to boot OS V 10.11 El Capitan.

The process is trail/error, so I need an easy way to change the BIOS Boot mode between MBR/EFI.

It is because I'm not sure I have proper disk for EFI boot, although I've got an OS X 10.11 installed on the machine and it doesn't boot in MBR mode, but if I set EFI Optimized Boot and try to boot my installation I don't have an success. The error code is 0xD6 - Trying boot selection.

The worst thing is I don't have an access to the BIOS Set Up at all so, I have to recover or update the BIOS to get the system working.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hello Spas,

Regarding your question, "to install MAC OS X 10.11 – El Captain, using EFI BIOS Boot". First, according to our record this is system has limit information, because is http://ark.intel.com/products/36599/Intel-Server-Board-S5520HC End Of Life. Also, this system was test for windows and Linux OS (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/36599/Intel-Server-Board-S5520HC Download Page).

For BIOS information and information on the system, you can download the https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/motherboards/server/s5520hc/sb/e39529013_s5520hc_s5500hcv_s5520hct_tps_r19.pdf Technical Product Specification:
  • BIOS Utility
    • Page 72
  • Clear BIOS
    • jumper (J1E6)
    • Page 119
    • Page 118 - Motherboard layout

Also, are you getting any error message when trying to install the OS or run the OS.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Best regards,

Thank you for answering me.

  • BIOS Utility

My problem was EFI Optimized Boot

As usual not knowing enough, I've made a wrong assumption about it. Once set I couldn't change it using the BIOS Setup Utility.

BIOS simply doesn't allow access to the BIOS Setup Utility in EFI Optimized Boot mode. But updating it using startup.nsh batch file is almost convenient way to reset it.

I've generated an installer which, unfortunately, installs a MAC OS - it boots on Mac machine but the installation doesn't boot I my classic BIOS setup.

No errors, nothing. Simply no boot.

The good news is BIOS rev.64 offers possibility to define an EFI boot.

The bad news - I still don't know how to determine the necessary parameters so, any help is highly appreciated.

  • OS X El Captain has been released on September 30, 2015 and the Board S5520HC Firmware Update (BIOS 64) - on May 24, 2014. So, I think there are good chances for it to work on S5520HC board.

If it does there is a way up.

Hello Spas,

Thank you for the information. But checking further this OS was not validated for this system board. Windows and Linux have been installed with the proper RAID controller drivers. You can find this information on the http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/gpt_white_paper_1_0.pdf White Paper for the motherboard.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

Thank you for showing me the White Paper GUID Partition Table (GPT)

"How to install an Operating System (OS) using the GUID Disk Partition Table (GPT) on an Intel® Hardware RAID (HWR) Array under uEFI environment."

Unfortunately, I cannot resolve my problem with BIOS doesn't work with "EFI Optimized Boot" set.

My (AMI) BIOS version is 0064 now. I have Intel® Integrated Server RAID Module AXX4SASMOD configured as IT/IR RAID, no disks connected (I'm just trying).

BIOS doesn't work when "EFI Optimized Boot" is set.

The simple test I've done:

Static Boot Ordering:

Internal EFI Shell

someting else

brings the BIOS to its SHEL when "EFI Optimized Boot" is NOT set and nothing happens and nothing can be done when set.

(In the last case I have to "clear CMOS" to get the BIOS back.)

So, is this a bug with version 0064 or I'm missing something in my configuration.

It would be helpful for me if I knew a BIOS version working with "EFI Optimized Boot" set.

(Of course, I could find one if there were a bug with 0064 provided my configuration is flawless.

Otherwise there would be double error in my setup.)

Thanks

Hello Spas,

Thank you for the information. I will pass on the information, but been http://ark.intel.com/products/36599/Intel-Server-Board-S5520HC End Of Life, is going to be limit information that engineering will have for this model. But I will pass on the information and see what we can find. Also you can try downgrading the BIOS to the previous version.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

I've started this conversation with the idea I need some help with EFI boot so as to load OS X 10.11 El Capitan on a machine with

Intel® Server-Mainboard S5520HC

I've got this!

BIOS support EFI boot from its SATA drives, not only trough RAID controller.

It doesn't need EFI Optimized Boot for my purpose.

I'm not using the board in a server installation but in PC.

Of course, I have more work to do but my first impression is very good.

Thanks for your attention.

Respectfully
