SCM2 init problem "component unfit"

I have an Intel modular server that has been running great using a single SCM. We recently decided to add the second SCM in order to spread the disk I/O load and increase performance.

However, after inserting the second SCM, it initializes and seems to load fine and I see the following event messages (in order):

1. "Storage subsystem controllers are redundant"

2. "Failback started to partner controller"

3. "Failover of partner SCM due to user action or controller failure"

This seems to be as it should be, but then I get the following:

1. "Storage subsystem controllers are no longer redundant"

2. "SCM2 Fault LED has been illuminated."

3. "Component Unfit"

I have verified that each SCM works correctly when it is inserted as SCM1, so I know they both work. This behavior only occurs when the second SCM is added.

I have tried looking at the diagnostics data for the storage subsystem, but the zip file it downloads seems to be password protected.

Here are the system specs:

MFSYS25

7 SATA drives

7 SAS drives

System Firmware: 6.5.100.20100630.21247

SCM Firmware: 3.6.140.5 (same on both)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you post the diagnostics file here? Take the diagnostics file with both SCM inserted.

I tried to attach both the storage diag and a full system diag.

The site keeps coming back with

"Virus Found in diagout.htm.zip"

is there an alternate way to send them?

Seems you're using SATA drives in your system. Are you using the required SATA to SAS converter? Does your system meet the requirements to use SATA drives? See http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/mfsys25/sb/CS-031001.htm http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/mfsys25/sb/CS-031001.htm for details.

Also I noticed you're mixing SAS and SATA drives in your system. See http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/MFS5520VI/sb/CS-030301.htm Tested hardware and operating system list for requirements of mixing SAS and SATA drives. Using hard drives in the list is highly recommended.

Yes, all true. My bad.

It seems as I've made some assumptions about the system downgrading gracefully. Our intention was to have the SATA drives on one controller to supply less critical storage that can go offline if the controller fails. The SAS drives were to be the critical storage. For this reason, we did not install the port converters on the SATA drives.

However, the second controller seems to punt if it's drive map doesn't match the first.

Ok, thanks for the help. It is very much appreciated.
