Is it possible to upgrade just the processor from 5500 series to a 5600 series in a IBM 3550M2 rack server. It seems such a waste to throw away the old entire server-- 1 year old-- just to upgrade the processor

The core chipset can support it, but whether or not that specific server can is up to IBM. Did you check their website already?

Have seen the IBM website but it does not talk about any upgrade. The review of the processor indicates that it should be possible http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2010/03/31/amd-opteron-6174-vs-intel-xeon-x5650-review/3 http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2010/03/31/amd-opteron-6174-vs-intel-xeon-x5650-review/3

Right. The processor doesn't care, and the chipset doesn't care. But the board itself, and the BIOS IBM is using, may not support it, is the thing.
