If it can't, what is the alternative interface to test the individual drives from our own software?

You may use the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24531 Intel® RAID Web Console Utility to monitor the status of your array, and of your drives. You may use the .mib files to monitor the events of your RAID controller with your own application.

This option would be monitoring your drives for S.M.A.R.T. events,; however, it does not provide an individual test for your drives.
