Body Scaning

hello

I would like to use intel realsense camera as a depth sensor for 3d body scanner.

Construction of the scanner will be simmilar to http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:127968 , but insted turning the costumer , camera l will be  turning around the costumer on  the circle  path with diameter of 3 m.
The main problem is lenght of USB cable, in last prototype we were using Asus Xtion with 10m active usb2.0 cable. Realsense need a usb 3.0, 10m extension cable are around 100 usd ...
Is there any posiiblity to connect realsense sensor to Edison or any other micro PC then stream depth feed form sensor to PC , and the do reconstruction. it will work like that http://skanect.occipital.com/use-structure-sensor-skanect/ .

There is no need a real time reconstruction ,

Thanks Wojciech

If you are interested in a longer cable, you may have more luck in finding a cheaper option if you search Amazon for the keywords 'usb 3.0 cable repeater' to extend the reach of the camera cable.

I saw a 5m cable for $20 on Amazon.com.  And one seller was offering a huge discount on a 10m cable, at $35 (reduced from $90).

Interesting thought!!! Extension wires/ cables are one of the option. You can try Edison board, but accuracy while transferring the data is a factor to keep an eye. Keep us posted on this interesting work. Cheers!!!!

Thanks for replay.

Cable price is one thing, other is that because whole scanner is moving on cicrcle, cabel are twisting ... In current prototype so far I damage over 10 cabels ... Right now I'm using USB RJ45 converter and in the part of the cable which usually broke , I put 1 m of rj45 cable  and two contectors like that http://images.okazje.info.pl/p/komputery/9000/lacznik-rj45-zenski-rj45-zenski-kat-6-do-polaczenia-dwoch-kabli-plastikowy.jpg . So when cable damage I replace just that 1m part.
So if I can stream depth feed that will solve a lot of problems !!!.

Thanks

Vidyasagar  that what i was thinking on , to connect realsense to edison or some micro PC, record depth stream , and send it to PC to do  reconstruction. I was looking on the SDK documentation , but can't find information if  it is possible to do reconstruction from recorded depth stream.

I don't need it on real time so losing accuracy during data transfer should not be an issue.
Our project reach a step where we need to make a decision on which technology choose. So far we based on ReconstructMe SDK , and Asus Xtion, but i wish to switch to Realsense because sensor is cheaper, better , and i think will have much better support, R200 looks like exactly what wee need, but all software for kinect v1 is much more mature.

Your idea of the camera rotating around the person reminds me of the UK's BBC News newsroom.  They got rid of human cameramen and instead have robot cameras that travel around the studio on a floor track.

BTW, are you trying to stream depth data from the computer, or just take a video recording of the depth feed?

If you only want a video recording of it, I recommend using the XSplit Broadcaster PC software, which I use to record the videos I post on this forum.  It can record what the camera is seeing live and stream it over the internet to a wide variety of video sites like YouTube, Twitch, etc.  It can also do HD MP4 offline video recordings if you take out a $14.99 USD subscription that lasts 3 months.

https://www.xsplit.com/products/broadcaster

You can also use its editing interface to mix together different media from various sources and camera devices at the same time, such as webcam video feed, computer screen capture, "green screen" footage, etc.

Hello

In sdk documentation https://software.intel.com/sites/landingpage/realsense/camera-sdk/2014gold/documentation/html/index.html?samples_unity_toolkit_samples.html sample 6 which showing how to "create a mesh dynamically from the depth data".

So I want record or stream depth data using edison/realsense and on PC create mesh from that depth data ( streamed or transfered).

I think this is the right approach. Pls. give a try and get back if you need any further info. Also as you are not doing this real time, it answers my question and accuracy mismatch is out of scope now.

Hello,

my name is Dario Folli, i'm working with CSP Wasp in Italy, the first Italian's 3D printer producter. we are actualy working to a project to realize a Body scanner and while i was doing some research i have see this body scaning forum's. From what i understand RealSense can be use as a sensor to capture 3D image like a Kinect or Asus Xtion, my question is if we can use it for this project.

If so, can we have a sample of product to realize a first prototype?

thank you in advance.

Hello Dario, you can purchase RealSense developer kits from: http://click.intel.com/realsense.html.

I hope this answers your question. If you would like further assistance, please post your question in the RealSense Community. This forum in the Intel Developer Zone will soon be archived and all support will be handled in RealSense Community.
