COM vs. DLL's

Can you please give me a rundown on the reasons, pros/cons of using COM objects rather than DLL's when doing mixed language programming, or even just to create reusable objetcts or function libraries?
I understand that COM servers can be accessed across a network, which obviously DLL's can't, but what about when everything is on the same machine?

Thanks and regards, Marcello Cattaneo
