Sell Solution with R200 cameras

Hello everbody,

I wonder if it is possible to sell a solution which uses the R200 developer kit camera.
Can I resell the developer kit as part of my solution? What are the conditions for reselling the developer kit?
Will there be a special edition of the R200 for resell or just for normal consumers?

Thank you very much!

The "proper" caseless circuit board version of the R200 can be incorporated into commercial products by manufacturers.  It's uncertain to me whether that the cased developer kit version of the R200 could be bundled for commercial resale though.

Retailers commonly bundle together products from various different sources (for example, a videogame shop selling a games console with their own selection of games - they did not seek permission from the game publishers to put those games in the bundle, presumably).  Because large chain stores get a significant wholesale discount on games, small independent stores often go round supermarkets on launch day and buy their own stock of a title from the supermarkets because they could not resell it at a competitive price otherwise.

If it *were* possible to rebundle a Developer Kit in your product, I imagine the best way to do it would be to supply it unopened in the original box with shrink-wrap still around it and let the customer set it up themselves.  That would be a lot different to supplying, for example, a PC with the camera pre-installed, which would probably be less safe in terms of the possibility of violating the camera's sales terms.

Hey Marty, I think it is the opposite.

You can't resell the camera devkit, but you can sell the camera as part of another system.

Hey Marty, Hey samontab,

thank you for your answers so far.
Is there any official statement from Intel or has anyone of you ever resold a device?
Are there any other stand-alone-device (peripheral device) comming up in the future, or will the R200 be the only one?

By the way do you use any other device except the RealSense and Kinect (v1 and v2)?
Is there any interesting device which I haven't found yet?

Thank you!

Florian

I don't have any further knowledge about camera resale policies (thanks for your input, Samontab)  I haven't done any resales of cameras, no.  I got mine free as part of the 2014 RealSense App Challenge contest and didn't pay money for it, and equipment supplied in that contest is "permanent loan" (i.e you don't have to give it back after the contest ends but you can't sell it onwards).

If you're considering other devices, I would personally recommend taking a look at the HTC Vive.  It's virtual reality rather than augmented reality (you wear a VR headset) but what makes it especially interesting is that you can walk all round a 15 ft room with it instead of being confined to standing in front of the camera, and it runs at a speedy 90 frames per second.

This was answered in another thread some time ago.

Have a look here:

https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/realsense/topic/596335

Regarding other sensors, oh boy, there are many, many sensors, a new one appearing almost every month.

In terms of availability for a product though, I think RealSense cameras and the Kinect v2 are pretty much the best ones out there at the moment.

Project Tango is a really interesting project for Tablets from Google, and it seems that the smartphone version of it will be a RealSense one... great collaboration between Intel and Google... I'm very excited about this one.

Following this mobile trend we have Occipital's structure sensor, which looks interesting. There's also the Leap Motion, and the Pelican.

Now, if you go to the more expensive stuff you get things like the SwissRanger SR4000, SR4500, or light field cameras like Raytrix, or Lytro...

And more as these things change almost every month... 3D is really exciting these days...

Hey Marty, Hey samontab,

thank you very much for your input!
The HTC Vive is interessing but not for my current demand.
I have tested a lot of sensors but for now, only the Kinect v2 and RealSense
fulfill all my requirements.

Thank you!
Florian
