Intel VROC vs iRST

Hi,

Intel VROC is quite a new technology, howerver in term of features does it have comparable capability with iRST/ESRT2?

- Scan/import foreign configuration (i.e: move the hardware key and the disks to other identical system).

- Create a raid volume WITHOUT INITIALIZE it to preserve data (i.e: in case of  lost configuration).

Thanks.

Hello DuyHuynh,

Thank you for contacting Intel® Memory and Storage support.

As we understand, you need assistance with your Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel® VROC). If we inferred correctly, please review the following information:

To answer your questions:

1- in terms of features, does it have a comparable capability with iRST/ESRT2?

R/ Yes, please review the Client RAID and Data Center Solutions Technology Brief (https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/technology-briefs/client-raid-and-dc-raid-solutions-technology-brief.pdf), the Intel® VROC vs. Previous Intel® RSTe: Name Change Explained (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000055059/memory-and-storage/ssd-software.html), and the Intel® VROC Comparative Performance Guide (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000033123/memory-and-storage/ssd-software.html) articles for you to have a better understanding of this solution.

2- Scan/import foreign configuration (i.e: move the hardware key and the disks to another identical system)

R/ Yes, but you need to move it to an identical system (meaning same model, BIOS version, and configuration) for it to be detected and able to read the previous RAID arrangement.

3- Create a raid volume WITHOUT INITIALIZE it to preserve data (i.e: in case of lost configuration).

R/ Yes, but you need to connect the SSDs on the same bays and assign them to the same VMD. To be able to re-create the RAID volume. Remember to do not initialize it since it will delete all the information contained on the SSDs.

If you are interested in learning more about VROC, please visit the Intel® Virtual RAID on CPU (Intel® VROC) Public Training:

  • We advise you to contact your PC OEM (original equipment manufacturer) to check the options and features available for their system.

Please consider that the OEM creates and modifies their solutions to fit their needs, and they have their list of compatible hardware and software that sometimes is different from our list. For example, there are cases that some of the systems need a specific BIOS or software configuration to be able to work with an OS, add-on hardware, or feature.

We will follow up with you next Monday. The 4th of January 2021, if we do not receive an answer from you. Please let me know if you would like to schedule a different date for the follow-up.

Best regards,
