Update SSD firmware by connecting the SSD via USB as a mobile hard disk

I have some S3510 480GB SSD drives and put them in different mobile hard disk containers. So they connect the system via USB cables.

Is it possible to update their FW this way?

Thanks!

Hello, justinwubo.

Thank you for contacting Intel® Memory and Storage support.

As we understand, you are requesting support related to your Intel® SSD DC S3510 Series. If we inferred correctly, please, review and provide us with the following information:

1- Based on the article USB/PCIe* Adapters and Enclosures for Intel® Solid State Drives

 https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000055211/memory-and-storage.html

While using the Solidigm™ Storage Tool, we recommend connecting the drives directly to the motherboard. If you are connecting the SSD through an adapter or enclosure (USB to SATA, USB to M.2, or Thunderbolt™ to M.2), keep in mind that the BIOS, motherboard, backplane, and some tools may not recognize the drive.

For more information, visit The Solidigm™ Storage Tool (Intel® branded NAND SSDs) article:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000090126/memory-and-storage.html

Intel's NAND SSD business has been acquired by Solidigm™, visit the Intel® Newsroom for details.

The Solidigm™ Storage Tool (Intel® branded NAND SSDs), a.ka. SST supports Intel branded NAND SSDs. The Intel Memory and Storage (Intel MAS) or any other previous tool will no longer support the Intel® branded NAND SSDs with their 2.0 release. The SST continues to supply GUI and CLI interfaces, all features and functions as Intel MAS did.

One key difference will be keywords used in the CLI. The executable name is now sst.exe, replacing intelmas.exe (plus any other references to Intel). An example is below. Consult the SST User Guide for more.

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/726377/SST-CLI-User-Guide-Public-727329-001US.pdf

Intel MAS: intelmas.exe show -intelssd

SST: sst.exe show -ssd

2- We would appreciate it if you may connect the SSD directly to the board and let us know if you still experience issues updating the firmware.

3- The system details by extracting the SSU logs.

A- Go to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/ (for Windows*) and to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26735/ (for Linux) to download the software.

B- When you finish downloading it, open it.

C- Attach the file generated by the tool in your reply.

The following How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows* article may be helpful:

We will follow up with you again on Thursday, the 9th of June 2022, if we do not receive an answer from you. Please, let us know if you would like to schedule a different date for the follow-up.

Best regards.

Thanks for the reply!

I tried to identify the SSD via USB to SATA through the CLI, but unfortunately the tool could not find the SSD drive. I guess I have to connect it to the motherboard. Updating FW of 6 SSD disks probably take some time 😞
