Possible to upgrade w/ DVD on PATA?

Has anyone been able to upgrade the SSD firmware w/ their DVD drive on PATA?

When I switch the SATA configuration to IDE mode, the DVD isn't picked up by the BIOS.

The SATA configuration has to be set to AHCI and the SATA2 Controller must be set to AHCI mode for the DVD to be picked up by the system. However, with those settings, the firmware upgrade software doesn't see the SSD (although the BIOS has no problems detecting it).

I don't really need to hear that I need to upgrade my DVD drive. It works just fine... I'm wondering if there is a workaround, and/or if this is a bug in the firmware.

Thx.

It seems a workaround may be to just ignore upgrading w/ a DVD and boot from a USB device that has the patch on it. I'll try that.
